phase 90(new block style) is nice 'n' chewy out front, good range of speed and not too apparent. imo it kinda sucks if you put it after you're distortion, makes it harsh mush.

I own both but prefer the sound of the Small Stone. There is something about it that makes it more ethereal.
If you're going to run it into the lead channel for high gain you might prefer the Phase 90.
You should be able to demo both at a GC. The sounds are very different.

The correct answer is
because they are the 2 phasers that all others are compared to, yet they are different enough that all phasers sound more like one than the other. It takes both to get the sounds from each, no overlap. Each is one half of the entire phaserdom duality. Every phaser enthusiast should make time for owning both a 90 and a Stone at some point and go back and forth between them for a good while.
Which 90, and which Stone, are the next questions.
Is there a phaser that can imitate both a 90 and a Stone? In the same price range? I think the HBE does, plus it does asymmetrical vibey stuff. It's a surprisingly versatile and great sounding unit that covers a lot of 90 and SS phase sounds.

or for a 90, some like the script logo sound, some like the block logo sound, the EVH approximates both, or if you don't care about not having an adapter you can get the '74 RI for the extra goodness, you can hear it
for a Stone, I had a Nano model I got for $79 new and I thought it was great

Phase 90 to me.
I remember doing a mod on it, removing a resistor if I remember correctly made it sound less harsh with overdrive and with a clean sound had that Albert King vibe going on, plus it's orange, looking back I kind wish I kept it.
The small stone isn't orange therefor it's not nearly as cool.

Haven't used the Stone, but the 90 was the only pedal (outside of OD) to ever stay more than 60 days in my rig. For a simple pedal, it sure is versatile.
That said, I like the above idea of both, especially in light of PVfan's comments.

i just opened up my phase 90, and realized(after owning it for almost a year) that there's a treble/depth trim pot:smack: it's a nice control though

Semi off topic but all boutique or modern analog phasers seemed to be based off these isn't there any 8 10 or 12 stage analog phasers anymore? I use a PH-3 cos I like the deeper swirlier sound of the 8 stage. Back on topic the only way you can choose is by playing them both from my experience (software emulations) I like the Small Stone better for cleaner swirlier stuff where the phase 90 sounds good before distortion EVH style.

Wow - great question! I'm with the get both crowd. You'll never need another and have every sound you need. I'm partial to the 90, but for no good reason. Both are awesome.
Been getting phasey lately. what about the VH script version with the extra setting.

Been looking at the VH and it is tempting for that extra setting, don't usually go for signature type stuff but its an interesting proposition.
Will probably get both the 90 and the small stone as they so seem very different. If I go down the used route I can do it for less than $200 which is alot less than some of the boutique pedals out there that attempt to cover bother bases.

Apples and oranges truth be told. I like both and have owned several of both over the years. The Phase 90 is more swooshy where the SS is thicker and with the colour switch offers mored different sounds.
FWIW, I have owned LOTS of phasers over the years...phase 45, phase 90, phase 100, Small Stone, Bad Stone, Maestro Mini Phase, Foxx Foot Phaser. Boss PH-1r, etc, etc, etc...these days Im down to one and it's an early russian Small Stone!
If you ddecide to go small stone ANY of them are good...trust that even the new Nano Stone is a great pedal if you go MXR stay vintage or pay extra and get the 74 Ri Script...the regular Dunlop/MXR Phase 90 sounds terrible and the EVH version isn't much better IMO.
