phase/parallel sound for Jimmy Page wiring

hey guys,

One of LP's is up for a complete re-wire. I'm thinking about doing it Jimmy Page style using a C5 and a '59n.

I was thinking about skipping the phase/parallel portion of it to simplify things... I'm not really sure if I'll use it... I like the idea of independently coil splitting each pup tho.

So my question is, can someone give me some examples of LZ songs where Jimmy uses either phase or parallel switching. I want to get an idea of how it sounds and what I'll be missing.

Also, in the middle position, are both pups always out of phase, or only when the assigned pot is in the 'up' position?

Thanks!

Re: phase/parallel sound for Jimmy Page wiring

Here's how it works:
B Vol: Splits Bridge pickup
N Vol: Splits Neck Pickup
B Tone: Flips phase on one pickup (offhand, I don't remember which) it only affects the middle pickup selector position
N Tone: Adds the Neck in Series with the Bridge (normal LP wiring has the two pickups in parallel in the middle position)

So individually you are only able to get the HB's in series or split, then you can add them together in parallel (stock) or series. Then you can flip the phase whenever you are combining the N+B in either position.

If you only do two, the splits are the most useful, I use them all the time. The phase would come next, followed closely by the series/parallel. One of my favorite combos is both pickups split, in series, out of phase. It's a great stuck wah-ish type lead. BTW - mine is wired with a Custom/59 combo, I like it a lot. The Custom is hot enough to stand up split on it's own in the bridge. I can't name specific songs when you can find these tones, Page's realy #1 didn't have anything close to this wiring system. I originally used it because I'm a huge fan of his, but since then I really find it to ba an ultimately versatile guitar, more so than a Jimmy Page axe. I say do it all...

I installed a coild tap on the stock PAF or '57 Classic Pickup in my Les Paul Custom years ago. The tapped clean sound is needed for the beginning of "Since I've been Loving You".

I've put the 21-sound JP system in about a dozen guitars over the last few years (I'm a self-taught solderer). Its really not hard, and you have so many options, if you ever need them. You still have the basic 3 tones also. Why not do it?
