Phat Cat Neck in Gibson Studio

As the title says, I wanna put a phat cat neck pickup in the neck of my Gibson Les Paul Studio 2015 Sprint run. It has wiring for a coil split. I don't wish to split the Phat Cat, but can I wire the pickup in and just ignore the coil split? And if so, how?

Re: Phat Cat Neck in Gibson Studio

You can't split the Phat Cat. But I would be concerned about the potential of the stock Phat Cat being too dark in the neck, It has twin A2s wheras the original Gibson P90s had twin A5s. You might try an A5/A3 combo if you are in to mag swaps.

But as for wiring, solder the metal sleeve to the back of the volume pot and solder the interior wire onto the lug of the volume pot that isn't soldered onto the pots casing.

Thank you! As for darkness, I don't think it would be an issue I need something thick to counter balance the tv Jones in the bridge

That's fine, but be careful. It's possible to have too dark a neck in comparison to the bridge. If you EQ your setup for the neck, the bridge will be thin and bright. EQ it for the bridge and your neck is dark and boomy. This is usually an issue with humbuckers, but might not be an issue with a P90 in the neck. Just know that the Phat Cat has two magnets to play with if you have issues with it.

Re: Phat Cat Neck in Gibson Studio

FWIW, I have a Phat Cat neck mixed with a '59B (a pretty bright pickup), and I don't think the Phat Cat is too dark at all.

I like the Phat Cat in the neck, no matter what the bridge pickup is... a great choice.

Re: Phat Cat Neck in Gibson Studio

What sound are you wanting from a Phat Cat? A Gibson P-90 sound, because those aren't the pickups for that. You may like a Phat Cat, just know that it doesn't have the high-end or clarity of a Gibson P-90, at least not in an LP. I put a Phat CatN in the neck of an LP & SG, and they were just too dark for me. I had to put in brighter magnets to get some treble. I'd probably like a neck Phat Cat in brighter wood, like a Strat. However, the most logical place for them is in a Gibson design guitar, as some LP's and SG's come with stock P-90's, so a HB-sized P-90 seems like a great idea.

I had great luck with 2 UOA5 mags in a Phat Cat neck. Really cool pickup for Magnet swaps.

I love P90 neck tone. Haven't tried that Phat Cat but six of my axes have P90s in neck position.

Re: Phat Cat Neck in Gibson Studio

I always wanted to try dual A3's in my Phat Cat. Right now, I don't find it too dark, but I'm still curious.

Re: Phat Cat Neck in Gibson Studio

I bought two quick connect adapters to make the soddering easy... But the quick connect adapters have 5 wires. How would I wire it this way?
