Phat Cat NECK mod...

I find that the Phat Cat NECK pickup is a bit overwound and does not match up perfectly with the bridge.

Has anybody here removed the cover and taken off some windings to clean it up a bit?

I thought I heard a reference to this mod before referred to as the "JAZZ CAT"

I think Zhangligun did that to one of his.

It's true -- though I didn't do it myself. (It was before I got into my current DIY phase of modding/rewinding/making pickups.) And I did it for the exact same reason you describe.

I sent it to MJ and had her rewind it to 7.5k with a 7.0k tap in case the 7.5k was still a little too hot. Turns out it was, so I switched to the 7.0k tap and haven't looked back.

It's been in my LP Standard neck for a year and I can't imagine a better, sweeter, smoother neck pu for it, humbucker or single.

I guess I will be adveturous this weekend and take one apart!
7k will be the target mod... that's about -10%

Just check the resistance periodically with the meter so you when you're getting close. I would also say put it back together at 7.5k and try it out -- your tastes might be different from mine and you might like it at 7.5.

Ugh... the cover was a beeatch to get off because it is potted so well and... I just destroyed one of my Phat Cats trying to remove windings.

Looks like I have to send it to MJ to get rewound now... big time bummer!

How much did it cost for a rewind?
