Phat Cats: PG Review "bright and clear" ????

Re: Phat Cats: PG Review "bright and clear" ????

I had a Phat Cat in the neck of my Les Paul for a while. I found it to be a very bright pickup.

Have you read the entire thread? It might be bright in a LP, I wouldn't know... mine is in a 17" full hollowbody with a laminated spruce top.

My Phat Cats in LP's necks sounded like they were in a closet. All mids and low end.

That said, if you somehow find it doesn't work for you, I'd suggest Wilde L90 by Bill Lawrence. The lower Henries is P-90-ish and the higher Henries are more PAF-ish. You'd get high quality pickup with clear-clean tone at an affordable price.

+1
They are super clear, and they split extremely well.

I had a 8H/4H set in my LPC for a pretty long while.

- I have a couple Duncan Staples, neck model, and they are incredibly bright and clear. Besides the price, the other drawback to them is that they require a very deep slot to fit.

I have to believe the the original intent and their best home will always be a phat hollow body.

Well, they were in the original 1954 LP Customs, so I kind of think they belong there too.

Let me put it another way: I liked my 1-3/4" flat top guitar better before I routed the neck pocket deep enough to accept one. In my opinion the additional void so close to the neck pocket was not the best idea in my guitar.

GFS Surf 90 in da house. Alnico 2/7.2K. While I don't think this is my end spot, (I am still ordering the Fralin Twangmasters and Bare Knuckles Manhattans), this is MUCH more in the direction I was thinking. Which means I will probably also try the TVJ T'Armonds,when/if he ever develops the "english" (humbucker) mount for them.

SD Phat Staples are tempting, but just too damn much money, especially after the uber-botched custom shop ordeal I recently went thru....

Thanks for that. Having had a REALLY BAD experience with the SD custom shop recently, I'm not eager to repeat it.

...and with my already mentioned nightmare experience with the custom shop....

...SD custom shop staples (horrendous recent experience with the custom shop)

Eric, respectfully...this was 6 months ago. Goodness, I personally got involved for you one on one, Evan got personally involved for you, the CS apologized for the mistake and they expedited your order as quickly as possible. They were behind on custom orders, Derek offered you a full refund and a return as an option. Doesn't any of that count? Doesn't any of that get included? FOUR times in this one thread? Unprovoked? Will it ever become OK?

Unfortunately, I have read about this 'horrendous' 'nightmare' 'uber-botched' and REALLY BAD CS experience on multiple forums. Ill tell you bro, we all deserve a little understanding. I hope you get the pickup or sound or solution you are looking for and I hope you can let this go and open yourself up to some great tonal options. Its a curious thread to say the least.

While appreciate your trying to help me on that one, Rodney, the fact remains that despite your efforts, it was the worst customer experience I have ever had, and it was with a "custom" shop. Thanks for your attempt, but it did little good. I do like the one pickup I got rewound, after much effort... even tho I had to superglue down the pickup surround because the custom shop drilled the hole too big and the pole passed right through it.

I hope you don't take this personally, since you apparently are working for SD again, but the bottom line- and the truth- is that I was treated very poorly by the SD CS, and they should be ashamed of their service they (didn't) give me. BTW- your buddy at SD- I forget his name- basically yelled AT ME over email, saying "I know we're under-staffed, I don't need to be told that".... ?????

Good luck with your music and work for SD. Unfortunately, they burned me pretty badly. And I didn't want a refund- I WANTED the order- but I wanted it RIGHT. Which I still didn't get. SD CS does not DESERVE any "understanding" from me, when I'm paying $400 for custom-wound pickups. "Custom" in "custom shop" should mean ACTUALLY GETTING WHAT YOU WANT....

Re: Phat Cats: PG Review "bright and clear" ????

AND.... I want to be CLEAR, RG.... I DO appreciate YOUR help in that matter; YOU went above and beyond the call of duty to try to help me (and you had nothing to gain). Unfortunately, no one else at SD did, (and they were gaining my $400), and in fact treated me like I was being a "pest." It's a shame- great pickups.
