Phat Cats !!!

Re: Phat Cats !!!

I love the one in the neck position of my PRS SE too. When I first got it, I was afraid it was gonna be too dark based on some reviews I read here, but it wasn't the case. It's nice and spanky, and matches well with the '59 in the bridge.

:)

Re: Phat Cats !!!

I built a custom left-hand Warmoth hardtail Black Korina strat with swimming pool rout, a left-hand pickguard with no control holes and two humbucker routs. I routed the body for a single pot near where the bridge pickup and a rout where the lower/shorter horn is now top and made holes in the pick guard accordingly. I installed a pair of Phat Cats in this guitar and it sounds fantastic, not to mention the oddness of the build.

Re: Phat Cats !!!

Phat Cat are really cool pickups. My favorite combo with them was a Pearly Gates in the bridge with a Phat Cat in the neck.

Cool thing about PCs is that the construction allows for multiple magnets to be used, can get some cool magnet variations. My favorite was 2 UOA5 mags.

I'll bet.

For a tone like David Gilmour got out of the neck P90 in a Les Paul for the Another Brick In The Wall solo, what magnet in a Phat Cat would do that best?

Re: Phat Cats !!!

Actually, I think the stock one would do best. And a studied analysis of his style (mostly his vibrato).

To be honest I really don't know–I've listened to the solo but my experience was only in Strats, not Les Pauls (I haven't owned a LP in 5 years.)

I think with some tweaking you could get a stock or modded Phat Cat to get close to what you are looking for.

The UOA5 added more clarity and made it more authoritative...so I think you'd probably get closer to that tone with it stock than 2 UOA5s.

+1 to this. The middle position of the PC/PG is great. It got me into p90 neck/bridge HB guitars and setups. I think I had A5s in mine

I love how chewy the bridge cat is. Don't love the pair, good but not great in the guitar I tried it in. A3 in the neck, a2 in the bridge paired really well in my old lp special

Not a fan of the pair, prefer the neck only. Great pickups, just feel they are better for pairing with others.

P-90's are easy to swap mags in, actually Phat Cats take a little extra work because the covers are soldered on (never seen any other like that) and when lifting the cover, you have to be careful not to lift it too high or one of the wires will break. They'd be easier with the normal method of screws to hold the coil to the baseplate.

I've had a number of Phat Cats and P-90's and don't care for twin A2's in any of them. To me the necks are too warm and the bridges too weak. I've experimented with a number of magnet combinations and use an A5/A4 neck and A8/A4 bridge set the most often. That gives the neck a little more body than twin A5's (ala Gibson) and still keeps a sharp high end; the bridge gets more mids and muscle (than either twin A5's or twin A2's), making it balance better with the neck. An A5/A3 gives a lot of definition in the neck slot and softens the A5's highs and lows a bit.

Re: Phat Cats !!!

I have an A5 Phat Cat in the middle of one of my HSH Strats. On its own it's pretty much the best middle pickup I've ever used. Has bite and warmth and bass. With the other pickups, it quacks wonderfully like any Strat but with a broad Gibson vibe to it. It's great.

Re: Phat Cats !!!

I would imagine it would be a great middle pickup that I would actually use(I never use one by itself). The coils would be slightly shifted from, say, a typical Strat position, so that would make it even more unique.

And I have it paired with PG+ in T-style Pacifica. I like this combo a lot: grindy PAF sound in the bridge and meaty sc sound that retains the high in the neck.

A bridge HB with a P-90 neck is a nice combo, each PU where it shines. That should be seen more often on factory guitars.
