Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

Re: Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

I would use whatever pick was around. For a while I was stuck on the Dava Controls, then Dunlop 2.0mm's, and now go between V-Picks' Screamer and Gravity Picks' 3 and 4mm Stealths.

Re: Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

For years I've tried numerous picks but always went back to Fender medium 351's. Recently, however, I find myself gravitating to Fender medium and heavy 346's.

Jazz lll

I dig the red ones and also the clear ones. I tried one of the max grip versions, and couldn't get that thing out of my hand fast enough. They're ok if they don't get moved, but if they do, it's impossible to adjust them on the fly.

The Nacho guy had a cool link w/custom Jazz III kinda thingies.
Hopefully he'll chime in & re-post teh link...

Just found my Adamas graphite 2.0s. Love those things. A v pick is in the near future, as well.

Re: Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

Apart from my old favorite, the 1.14mm thick, pink D'Andrea Delrex, turns out I do like the regular Jazz IIIs, surprisingly. I'm going to give the XL a spin next time. As a rule, I refuse paying premium for expendables such as picks and strings. I don't want to even blink when one's lost, worn or broken. Also, no more Ultex for me; I appreciate the slow wear, but they sound like pissing on cardboard.

Re: Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

I have added a few new picks and changed my mind about some since I began this. My new favorites are the D'Addario Duragrips in every thickness. They are similar to Dunlop Tortex, but slightly stiffer and they seem to last longer. When shredding, the textured top half of the pick doesn't really come into play, but when I back up on the pick for strumming, it is a great grip texture.

I disliked the D'Addario Cortex when I first got it because it seems "sticky" when traveling over the string, slowing me down. I now use it when I am learning a new lick specifically to slow myself down and keep in better contact with the strings. You have to spend time with some of these picks to learn what they have to offer.

I bought some of the John Petrucci Jazz III picks thinking they would be an improved Jazz III, but they are very different. They are made of a different material that is lighter weight and has a clinky sound to it. To me they feel a little too lightweight, almost hollow. I should have gotten the Eric Johnson versions I think.

I also bought a set of Dunlop Nylon picks in all sizes, and I don't like them at all. They all feel very cheap and flippy, even the thicker ones. The thinner ones are like trying to play with a pick-shaped piece of paper.

Re: Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

I recently got some of the Petrucci Jazz III picks and some Ultex Sharps in 1.14. I like both but I still prefer the Ultex Jazz III 2.0 better. I would like to see an Ultex Jazz III 2.0 in the Sharps size. That would be very nice!

Re: Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

I thought I would like the "sharp" version of some of my favorite picks, but I ended up not liking them as much. I don't know why really. They are just too pinpoint precise I guess. Contrary to that, the Gator Grip picks can feel almost too rounded and indistinct sometimes and they aren't my favorites either. I guess I am a middle-of-the-road guy.

I bought the entire line of Dunlop Gel picks a few months ago. They are very colorful, but don't really offer anything special playability wise. They have a hard, flippy, clinky feel to them.

Re: Picking Picks (Thats picks, not pickups)

I'm fascinated by the sound and playing experience of different picks. I have a little bowl full of various picks.

I also have a bowl full of these. A common pick that's cheap, plentiful, and lets me do just about anything I can do.
