Picks, Picks & More Picks!

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

I decided to go ahead and get a bag of the Tortex .73's to fall back on since that's what I have been using. To go along with the Adamas 2mm I ordered already I decided to give the Jazz III XL's a try.

Thanks again everyone for all the helpful input!

Spend some time with the Jazz III's. I will warn you, they're gonna be awkward at first, but please for the love of god, don't give up on them. As soon as you get used to them, you seriously CANNOT go back to any other pick. I've tried to go back to standard Tortex .88's like I used to use before I started using Jazz III's, and I couldn't deal. It didn't feel right anymore. Jazz III's have a certain sound and feel that I like much better. It definitely made me pick much cleaner.

Ultex Jazz III's are even better than the Nylon XL's ;)

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

My go to picks are V-Picks' Screamer(3mm) and Gravity Picks' 3 and 4mm Stealths. Usually V-Picks have a sampler pack for $20 that ranges from their ultra thin to the Screamer. With having M.S, is it easier to hold on to a thicker pick?

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

For years I have used the original Dava Nylon pick. It is the green one:

I like how they are thick enough for me, but also are extremely flexible. Where it says "Dava" is also raised so you have something to grab onto. The only thing I have trouble with is finding them. Sometimes Sam Ash and Guitar Center carry them, and sometimes they don't. You just never know.

Actually thickness not so much as size, though all things considered I think I would start having issues with anything thinner then the .73 Tortex I use. That's why I am curious how well the Jazz III XL's will work out. I have found the main complaint about them is their size ( in reference to the normal jazz III's ) That's why I went with the XL version. I almost went with the John Petrucci jazz III's and still might if the XL's are difficult for me to work with, since they are apparently even larger.

Time will tell, I still intend to try out V-picks as well as gravity picks. I will wait till I makes an accessory order after the beginning of the year when it's time to buy more replacement strings, etc...

I looked into those picks when I got back into playing after my 2 decade break. I like the idea but I tend to dig fairly deep when picking and from the photos I have seen the "grip" on them goes too far down ( though it may just be the way it looks in the image )

On a side note,
My 2mm graphite Adamas came in today. They are going to take some time to get used to after playing with .73 tortex mainly. Even though I have only played with them about 2 hours or so tonight, i really like the feel of them. I also have to say they are night and day when playing on my acoustic.

When the Jazz III XL's come in I will let you guys know my thoughts on them as well.

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

I really like the Ultex picks. They last long and have a great snap to them. They're a bit stiffer in comparison to Tortex, so you'll need to losen your grip when playing some funky chords for example.
Jazz III was very durable too. Maybe I should give them another go myself.

Thanks for the input and again thank EVERYone for all the helpful input, experiences, help, etc... Very much appreciated!

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

I just got a Dragon's Heart Hardened pick earlier today. I'll post how it plays when I get around to playing with it more.

Interesting, they were not on my radar until I saw your post. Took a quick look at their site, interesting pick. Love to hear your review of it.

My Jazz III XL's came yesterday but I didn't have a chance to try them yet, will update when I do.

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

Well I had a good bit of time to finally try out the Jazz III XL's, they were not that hard to get used too. I like them, but I also really like the 2mm Adamas graphite picks. I will get a lot of enjoyment out of both of them as far as I can tell.

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

I've stuck to these since I began using them 3-4 years ago....just perfect for me in every way :)

...used the regular red/black Jazz III's for years (lol decades) before that..tried the carbon fibre ones/Eric Johnson's/Petrucci's etc..but the yellow ULTEX's are best imo. I like the purple 3.00mm stubby's for leads as well sometimes.

I agree totally, I love the Ultex Jazz III"s. They took some getting used to, but they have the perfect feel for me.

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

Just got my first Ultex sharps. Will be giving them a test run.

all ultex sharps past 0.73 feel the same and play the same in a good way. if you like them, i strongly recommend the thickest sharps at 2.0mm. doesnt feel like a 2mm pick to the fingers but the result is the same.

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

I used to use dunlop jazz III's and ultex picks for years and years. Now I use stainless steel picks, specifically 0.3mm by Alice. Great picks, great to e and they never ever wear out.

i'm curious, do they have any issue with wound strings. i'm not always chugga-chugga player anymore, and really would like to use them, if they have no issues with wound strings (that is wound strings getting damaged prematurely)

No issues for me. Not sure if it is the evolution of my touch and technique or not but *knocks on wood* I have never broken a string while using them and I have used them with Elixir nanoweb strings (10-46) for up to 9 months without changing strings on a practice guitar and have used them on ernie ball slinkys also 10-46's for two months at a time without changing strings. The contact area gets a little love but it does not destroy the wound strings by any means. This is with daily use as well, most days see between 3 to 5 hours of constant chords, licks, lead and solo play.

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

My two favorite pics are Copper by Ice PIX and a pick made from an Old Vinyl record.

Re: Picks, Picks & More Picks!

Still very much pleased with both the 2mm graphite Adamas picks as well as the Jazz III XL's, really glad I didn't wait longer to try them out. MY wife needed a few extra bucks spent on an amazon order to get free shipping, so I decided to try out the 3mm Stubby. Hopeful they get here by the weekend so I can try them out as well. The Adamas have a very distinct feel and the Jazz III's make precision picking very easy with the sharp tip.

Again wanted to thank EVERYone for all the helpful insight on this thread!!
