Ok, but, if you look at Pino Palladino, Bobby Vega, or Micheal Rhodes, and countless other p-bass players, they use flats.

And, it doesn't sound dull or not cut through. The original pups that started this thread were darker, but didn't have that "p bass" sound honestly.

Still though, all advice and opinions are welcome.

I know good players use them, but when you actually put them on your bass it dulls the character of it, it doesn't really improve anything.

I never liked flats on a bass, but others can make them sound wonderful. I don't know if there are any hard fast 'rules'...you either like the sound/feel, or you don't.

Try Chromes, a little brighter than most flats.

If you like classic R&B, rock, blues, etc. you owe it to yourself to try flats. Heck even Steve Harris plays them! If you like the bright, zingy tone of fresh round wounds on bass, you probably won't like them... if you find yourself always rolling the tone back, definitely give them a go. (But I'd do it with vintage output pickups, not QPs or Hots)

Pups arrived today

And I agree with much of what people say about flats, but I want this bass to be unique. Since originally posting this I'm doing a lot of recording. I can get any tone I want with my nice stable, except that "p-bass" tone. So I'm searching, searching hi and low (all pun intended )

After all this time, I'm wired up and ready to rock. I really do like the "Vintage" much much better.

Ok, so ... they are on and I got an Emerson pre-wired kit because I'm tired of dealing with this bass and just want to play the damn thing

Ernie Ball Flatwounds are expensive, weird, slinky (yes, slinky) and sound and feel great. My experience with flatwounds was years ago with roto-sounds, and they were awful. Basically like playing really big wire hangers.

Not these. Very expressive, and best of all a few preliminary recordings have them sitting in the pocket. And yes, the Emerson adds a bit of clarity that wasn't there.

Anyways, again, thanks to all, she's just in need of a quick setup and time to play play play. PHEW!

$74?!? That's too expensive. I just paid like $40 for Labella flats.

Was the string bent around the tuner? They will break. You have to get enough wraps around the post with no sharp bends.

You can buy individual strings.

Anyways, yes, 34.95 a set, tax, had to buy a second set. I'm in contact with them, hopefully they will compensate. They do sell them separate, but 20 bucks when shipping is factored in. Ouch.

The bass is terrific though, many thanks. I'm starting a different thread about the flatwounds. Strange strings, in a good way.

It looks like they'll compensate me. Just kinda shocking to have an expensive string bust like that (in such a weird place)

It was wonky from the start. Lots of overtones and such.

Usually string companies are great about making this sort of thing right. I've had it happen with different brands, and the companies always stepped up.
