Pickup Recommendation for PRS SE 245

Hello everyone. The purpose of this thread is to inquire about which Seymour Duncan pickups would be most suitable for my purposes. The guitar in question is a PRS SE 245. Singlecut, dual humbuckers, stoptail, 24.5" scale, mahogany body, and rosewood fretboard. It is set up with 11-56 gauge strings in Drop C# (Drop D, half step down.) I'm running it through a Peavey 6505+ 1x12 amplifier. I am primarily a rhythm guitarist with plenty of power chords, palm muting, and chugging. My genre is among the lines of Hardcore Punk, Post Hardcore, Melodic Hardcore, Deathcore, and Metalcore. Examples of bands that are my influences include: Funeral for a Friend, Underoath, Escape the Fate, Bullet for my Valentine, and Rise Against. I was considering the Jazz/JB combo for their versatility but have read that the JB can be a hit and miss in Les Paul styled guitars and therefore I've become rather hesitant, skeptical, and indecisive. I look forward to your responses. Thank you very much for your assistance on this matter.

There's a reason the Hot-rodded humbucker set is such a staple in aftermarket pickups. They are consistent.

Sometimes JB's work out great in LP's, no argument there. Like you said, they won't sound the same in a Gibson as they do in a Super Strat (and no PU does). But the flip side is that I've been reading 10 years of posts from members about JB's being a big disappointment for them, the offending guitars almost always being mahogany. There is a connection there, although it's certainly nowhere near 100%. The OP is already saying he doesn't want to risk having that happen, especially since there's other Duncan options for what he wants.

Another point is that a 'versatile' set often means the bridge and neck PU's are EQ'd very different from each other, and that may or may not be a good thing depending on what the player wants. In the case of the 'Hot Rodded Set', there's absolutely nothing hot rodded about a Jazz. A number of players prefer matching their JB's with a different neck HB.

Duncan makes many models of PU's, JB's are just one of them. They've been heavily promoted for decades, and are the PU most people associate with Duncan because of that. If the JB was the answer to most player's tonal quest, Seymour wouldn't have spent years carefully making dozens of others. The rest of his PU line isn't just filler, or created because Seymour couldn't think of anything else to do since the mid 1970's.

For a versatile set, I like the Jazz/Custom. For your tunings and influences, I'd go with a Black Winter set. The BWs are actually more versatile than they are marketed for.

Custom!! I had one in a 245 set up for drop C# with 12's. You will love it.

Re: Pickup Recommendation for PRS SE 245

I would suggest a custom or a black winter. I have a jb in my esp eclipse and I have a love hate relationship with it. I play metalcore as well and it definitely covers that genre nicely but at times to my ears it can have a little too much treble. but that being said I'm into darker warmer tones.

Thank you so much everyone. I've decided to go with a covered Jazz in the neck and an uncovered Custom in the bridge. I appreciate the prompt and constructive insight. I look forward to the future as a new member of this forum. Best regards.
