Pickup Recommendations?

So, I was dead set on what I wanted, thought I knew what pickups I wanted, and then I threw it all out the window HAHA Am doing a Warmoth Jmaster build, Alder body with maple neck with SS frets, dual hums, string-thru/no trem. Am stoked, but now not sure about pickup choice. Originally thought JB/Jazz, then realized I want to play clean stuff, too. I play mostly classic, alt-rock, and some 80s glam, but want to play more blues and clean, too. I still love the Jazz, am debating the JB now (have only owned JB and Invader in previous guitars, neither of which cleaned up well).

I think if I could find the happy medium with this guitar between Paul Ortiz's lead tones, Tab Benoit, and Michael Poulson's rhythm sounds, I could cover everything I love.

I'm wondering about:

59 b/Jazz
CC b/Jazz
CC b/Alcino 2 Pro
Seth Lovers (have only played them in a LP, but the neck was sex!)

Thoughts?

Perpetual burn maybe?

Re: Pickup Recommendations?

Do you have any pickups sitting around that you are familiar with? If so, try those first to get a baseline of how the guitar responds. Then you can adjust from there.

unfortunately, no, and I don't even have the guitar yet. There's only one guitar store where I live, and they have limited stuff, almost all old and pre-owned. Don't even know much about new gear. Why I was hoping to get some insight, I can't afford to plug-and-play, and can't get my hands on a lot without driving an hour+.

Playing a musical instrument isn't a cheap hobby.

You can know the woods and other specs all day, but it can end up sounding different than what you'd expect once you play it.

Maybe consider going with your first instinct and seeing where it lands you. Or...if you have another guitar, pull the pickups from that one long enough to get an ear for the new guitar.

Other options include looking for the companies that have an exchange policy to be able to swap out whatever set you buy if they don't work out.

Re: Pickup Recommendations?

I like slightly darker sounds in a Fender-ish guitar (that you don't want to sound like a Fender), so my choice is the CC b/Alcino 2 Pro with options to split them. If you like brighter sounds, the Jazz/JB will rock, but is more tight/less smooth.

Re: Pickup Recommendations?

I have the '59 B/Jazz N combo in one of my guitars and the JB/'59 combo in another. To be honest, I don't think the '59 in the bridge position is that much better at clean tones than the JB. Yes, it's a bit less fierce than the JB, but it's still pretty brash, IMO.

^^^this^^^

I think that also applies to a fair percentage of Duncan bridge models.

Re: Pickup Recommendations?

I have 59/pearly gates set in a guitar and they can play blues, jazz, rock, and they have good cleans. They are not for super heavy music but they work well for rock and everything else.

Disagreed. :boggled:

Re: Pickup Recommendations?

Since you like rock, choosing a hot but classic bridge hb like the CC seems like a great idea. I have the C5 in my jaguar and it's great. Secondly since you like rock but when you clean up you like to go blues I'd recommend the Phat Cat p90. It's as fat as a hb but has great bite for blues and is even good clean. The other benefit to choosing the Phat Cat p90 is that it will blend well with your high output bridge humbucker and represent the sound of each pickup well. It seems like if you use two high output hbs, middle position can end up lame.

What did you not like about the cleans with the JB? I've gotten great cleans with it.

Have you thought about maybe a Pearly Gates? Great for blues and rock–cleans up very nicely.

Re: Pickup Recommendations?

I know I never liked the cleans on a JB. To me, a JB does one thing extremely well, but that is it (at least for what I need). I know lots of other people dig it for everything. They make it sound better than I ever could.

Re: Pickup Recommendations?

OK guys, don't get TOO pissed at me after all this, but I decided to go with a set-up I have used before, and just go from there. The devil you know, eh? Yes, is a SD forum, and yes, these are most certainly NOT SD's, but I have used this pair before in a HH Soloist and was pleased, and that guitar is close to what am putting together now. It dawned on me that pickups/magnets are the easiest thing to change about a guitar, and I'd rather be playing than trying to be a tech, not to mention I am not Eric Johnson. If these aren't what I want, I can change them, but here's what's going in for starters. Ordered these about a week ago, opened my mailbox and found these beauts today.
