Yep probably true, i believe the shops exact words were "£49.99 to cover labour costs"

They're charging £50 a hour and rounding the job up to an hour.
It takes me about an hour all in I suppose.

Well if i was going to pay them to do it i might as well throw in an extra 20 quid and get them to set it up at the same time, might as well if they have to take the strings off anyway.

I'd charge US$50 to do it for somebody... Which is less than the US$76.53 they're asking.

Find a different shop, man. That's A LOT for the work they're doing. The best shops in my area don't charge nearly that much and do fantastic work. Of course you're on the other side of the pond, but still.

Theres only 2 shops near me and they both use the same tech whose self employed and all the shops pay him to do work for them.

However... I AM of the believe that just about anything on a guitar can be done at home with simple tools. I haven't done a proper nut or a refret/level/crown, yet, simply due to the proper tools not being cheap. LOL
Where exactly are you? There's gotta be more choices than that.

These guys are experts who do this all the time though, so it takes them a lot less time than an hour.
I'm no expert but I can change both pickups in a guitar - whether it has a Floyd or not - in about 15-20 minutes if I am focused on it, and not watching TV at the same time as I normally am.

Something needs to be clarified here.
A "f-spaced" pickup (i.e. DiMarzio) and a "trembucker" (i.e. S. Duncan) do not share the same dimensions.
Both pickups measure 53 from pole to pole but the actual bobbins are differently sized.
F-spaced pickups share the same bobbin shape as their regular versions. Their poles are just spaced out wider.
Trembucker bobbins are enlarged covering the entire baseplate.
This is why Trembuckers include a new mounting ring.
This may not seem like an issue, but some Asian guitars may have smaller humbucker routes that may not facilitate the bigger bobbins. In short, do your homework and bust out the ruler.
