Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

yeah, Im asking one of these questions.

I want something, I dunno... Different.. Guitar is mahog body and neck. 24.75" scale..VERY light tho.. Made in the 80s. Stock Guild pups are pretty good, but there is something I dont like.. I hear it when I play (Oh, yeah,, The playing.... haha) But I forgot exactly what it is..Anyhow.. Maybe Ill get to plug it up tomm and articulate what it is, but wanted to throw this on up.. IIRC, there is a brittle tone, right at the attack, then it sounds fine. A hair bright. I have to keep the tone knob rolled down a bit all the time.

Anyhow, looking for something kinda hot and heavy. May consider dimarzios on this one.. dunno why, but my gut says would be a good fit.. Im usually always a Duncan guy. Since the guitar is old, Im feeling like a Super Distortion may be a good fit. But open to suggestions . Dimarzio or Duncan.

The biggest thing is going to be Neck pickup.. This is where Ive had the most trouble getting satisfied.

I believe Ive heard the Air Norton is a great neck pup.. True? Neck or bridge model?
I have used dimarzio PAF, Paf pros in the neck before and didnt like em much..

Also, I need a great neck pup for a 25.5 inch superstrat. How is the Pearly Gates in a 25.5? I have always mostly used 59b models in the neck or Jazz's. The 59bs are really good, but I wanna have some variety. Same with the Jazz. Current neck is a Jazz and have a 59/custom hybrid in the bridge. Jazz just seems alittle thin, or weak. Been waiting and hoping for the Hybrid neck to come out, but looks like its dead in the water. So.... PG?? or???

Thanks!!

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

The PG sounds excellent in every Strat I've heard it in, especially in the neck. For your other guitar, you might look into pickups with Alnico II magnets, which can get away from the bright with a hard attack. They have mids, and are 'squishy' sounding, a little more dynamic in the attack.

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

Thanks alot Mincer!! Thought Id already said that. Yeah, will prolly try a pearly.

Anyone else with any input??

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

I have a superstrat with PG in the Bridge and it sounds great. I have a 59 in the bridge (imagine that). I would honestly say for your first guitar that you listed, maybe the distortion is a good one. I haven't had one but I've played on them, also a pearly gates in a mahogany guitar is always a nice fit, very good pickup.

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

Gotta ask....what is bad about having the tone rolled down. Any reason why it has to be up.....I mean the whole function of the tone control is to use it to remove highs you don't like.

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

What's this Guild you speak of?

I've "really" been wanting to use a Super II @ the neck of something, just don't have any ca$h...

It amazes me how many people don't touch this control. Like 90% of guitarist- it is like it will cause a fire or something. I use mine all the time.

It kinda castrates the pickup a little bit. I prefer to adjust the EQ than the tone control.

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

The tone control can be used on the fly. It has a dramatic effect on the resonant peak. Especially if you have the right pot and cap combo, value wise.

I discovered the wonderful tool that is the tone control awhile back.. no avoidance on my part at all. my complaint in this case is that I have to have it rolled down just a smidgen (to about 8) during normal playing, whereas it would be easier to just dial up all the way as I normally would. So, its easy for me to roll all up real quick or way down, but I have to remember ONLY with this guitar when rolling up to dial back alittle. So, not that the tone knob scares me, just having to get to the sweet spot when using this guitar..

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

So, prolly going to do a PG in the superstrat neck.. Seems like last time I posted a what pickup thread, I got alot of recommends for a Dimarzio Air norton..

What about the 24.75" guitar?? its similar to an explorer

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

The Air Norton is a great neck pickup if you want something warmer, there aren't bridge or neck versions, just the Air Norton. I would recommend trying the regular Norton in the bridge, it's a great pickup and would probably match with the Air in the neck.

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

Thanks!!! I havent had alot of luck with Dimarzios, except the Super D and had a TZ in a guitar and really liked it. But my other experiences have left me not real eager to try more..But Im sure there are some Id like.. These may be a great place to start. Been curious about the Fred for awhile, but worried it wouldnt be enough.. The TZ too much, so the Norton may be right on. Plus, they are easy to get in red... : )

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

As per the description, the non-air Norton is kinda between the Fred and TZ, it has the drive and mids of the TZ without the big bottom (Spinal Tap ref here ;-) And it does have some of the harmonics that the Fred, IMHO it's one of their best bridge pups. I also like the Breed bridge, but it's almost too polite for lack of a better word.

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

devastone... You by any chance know if those pickups would be the same height as a Duncan custom and jazz?? the guitar is direct mount and the distortion was too tall. I emailed dimarzio and asked about those and a couple of others. They responded by sending me the measurement diagrams (which I already saw on their site) and saying they were sure the crunch lab would be too tall

Depends what you play. I think Superdistortions are a one trick pony, and unless you play moderate gain or more they suck. Very clangy, harsh and sterile and distort even in the clean channel. But take that gigantic ceramic out and put an A2 or A5 in there and it makes for a slightly hot vintage PAF sound.

The only way I could get good tone out of a superdistortion was (on a Marshall) to have gain on 7, bass on 1, middle on 10, contour on 2 treble on 5 or less. But if a mid range 1970s tone

If you haven't bought a pickup yet, how about a pearly gates? Mind you all depends on what you play.

Re: Pickup suggestions?? 2 applications

Air Norton is a good pickup. It's darker than what I like now, though. I had that and an Evo in an old RG470, and that setup did lots of sounds very well, at various gain levels.

I havent zeroed in on "my thing" yet, but normally play blues to metal. Old school metal, not new , tuned down 10 steps, cookie monster grunt stuff.. : )
