So i need some new pickups for my C-1 Custom FR. Its my favorite guitar, but i never play it because i hate the invaders so much. So i'm looking for recommendations on what to do. First off, i'm into some heavy rock, like Avenged Sevenfold, FFDP, Trivium, but generally i'm more into mainstream, or classic rock. Halestorm, Adelita's Way, or the Eagles, Stray cats, Skynyrd. My bands play stuff more out of the second two categories. With that said, i like to use a little more distortion then i probably should. I'm using a 100w peavey tube amp, so i don't think that's too much the issue.
Anyways, i have a JB/59' set in a hellraiser(i hated the emg 81/85 as well), and i like them compared to the Invaders, but i still think i can do better. Im looking for a bridge that has more articulation, and is crunchier. Less mids in the sound. And i want something with just a little more gain in the neck, as it doesn't push my amp hard enough. Other then that, i love the 59'. So i was thinking about trying the Full Shred. It seems like its the duncan pickup that fits my description the best. Am i missing something? I was thinking pearly gates in the neck.

I have also been reading about you guys doing magnet swaps. Is there something to be to be gained here?

Thanks.

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

I think you'd love an SH-5 or DD bridge and Demon or FS neck!

This guy nailed it, Go with a Distortion set or a Distortion with a Demon neck..... The Distortion sizzles where the Invader growls....seems to have a little more cut IMO and it sits right between the JB and the Invader in the tone spectrum......

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

The Distortion is very articulate and crunchy, but it's got lots of mids. For Eagles, Stray cats, Skynyrd, etc the P-Rail is a very versatile good choice also. The P-90 in it is just about as good as it gets for Eagles, Shynyrd, Doobies, etc. And the P-90, Rail, or parallel settings can get some very decent Stray Cats depending upon the rest of your setup. Used with a Triple Shot you can get just about anything you want.

The Demon is a fabulous neck pup. Haven't tried the Full Shred but the way it is described by many forumites, it sound like it would also be great.

Im going to stick with buckers in the guitar. Im looking into getting another with like P-90s or something different in it.

I've been watching some reviews of the Duncan Distortion, but they are all in like Drop Bb or whatever, so its hard to judge. I may go up to Guitar Center and see if they have something with distortions in it. They never have anything with full shred. So its liable to be a blind buy anyways.

The P-Rail IS a bucker. It's got a P-90 coil and a Rail coil in a bucker configuration. But can be split to either P-90 or Rail and can be both coils in series or Parallel.

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

Normally I'm a bid Duncan guy. (Custom/59n would be my Duncan recommendation) but lately I have fallen in love with John Suhr's pickups. I would highly recommend the SSH+ and SSV combo for this exact application.

I didnt realize that. Ill check both of those pickups out.

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

I cant hardly afford those Surh Pickups...one is about as much as i wanted to spend total.

Is the Duncan Distortion and Duncan Distortion Mayhem the same thing? Im confused.

Invaders? Invaders which you don't even like?? How'd those get in there?
Magnets swaps probably wouldn't accomplish much with Invaders. Sounds like you just got a way more modern/br00tal pup than what's needed for the stuff you wanna play.

Well.. judging by your preferences and the fact that Schecters kinda bridge the gap between superstrat and LP, maybe go Super Distortion + PAF (pro/36th anni/etc.)? Or a Demon+Pearly set? Or, if you've got a whole buncha spare change and/or find a sweet used deal, maybe take Schecter's "rip off PRS" aesthetic one step further and load it out with Dragon IIs or something (PRS USA pups are, since last year, available new for about $200 a pop)

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

They are black with chrome pole pieces, instead of black nickel or whatever they are. My C-1 Custom is a Prototype from 05 i believe, and it came with the custom invaders. It was a Synyster Gates prototype.

So i have a JB, and i was looking at a Full Shred, and earlier i was recommended a duncan distortion. How do these, as well as the Super Distortion, compare to the JB? I know the full shred is much more articulate, and is not quite as hot, correct?

And same with neck, i have a 59 thats pretty good, but i want it to be a little hotter. I had a Jazz and it sounded blah, whats the next step? I was thinking pearly gates, but then someone suggested screamin demon.

Has anyone tried a lace finger burner?

JB is late 80s metal, Super Distortion is 70s on maxx overdrive.

Screamin Demon and Pearly? No conflict there, Pearly goes in NECK, Demon goes in BRIDGE. Absolutely no known reason to have a Pearly bridge outside an HSS strat, or a Demon neck - at all.

Lace? Should stick to manufacturing single coils. Plenty of market saturation in the expensive humbucker segment, no need whatsoever for somebody else to reinvent the wheel... never heard of them having anything special to offer to the humbucker world, don't see why they would. Either make something waaaay cheaper, invent something actually new, or gtfo.

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

I'd say '59/custom hybrid for the bridge position. For the neck position, I'd say PATB-1n, simply based on the SD description, not personal experience.

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

Pearly gates is a great neck pup! I have a Pearly gates neck and bridge in an LP and it sounds great! Yes, the mayhem set is a distortion for the neck and the bridge.

Re: Pickups for C-1 Custom

It sounds like the Distortion Mayhem set would be right for what you're asking for.. the Distortion is articulate, aggressive and crunchy in the bridge, and definitely gives you more "push" in the neck than the 59.. I put a set of these in my nephew's C-1 and it sounds fantastic..

Actually there is a VERY good reason for a Demon in the neck....It sounds amazingly fabulous. Even better than the Pearly (which I also love in the neck).
