Pickups that fit EVH Wolfgang Standard (Indonesian Model)

Hi all,

I'm going to look at a EVH Wolfgang Standard today and something that would help shape my decision is understanding how easy it is to replace the pickups (in case I don't like the stock ones). Anyone here have experience with these guitars? I didn't see much using the search.

I've included a few questions I have about install procedure, selecting the new pickups, etc. and would really appreciate the input:

1. How easy is it to install new pickups? I hear that some routing might be involved or that the solder points are hard to reach?
2. I keep reading about short vs long leg pickups - is this something I need to special order or ensure its listed in the model of pickup I am buying?
3. I am thinking about a SH-11 in the bridge, but unsure on what to pair in the neck - I want this to be a big 80s guitar (VH, RATT, Europe, etc.) and I'm not familiar with buying pickups for Basswood bodies. Any recommendations on either bridge or neck pickups?
4. Trem or Standard spaced?

I believe those guitars ship with Humbuckers that mount with a short leg baseplate utilizing U shaped legs



Production level Seymour Duncan Humbuckers are made with traditional rectangular shaped baseplates but we can make pickups that will fit the pickup cavities as a Shop Floor Custom Order. We use specially made 'notched' baseplates that will fit the cavities so you don't have to modify the guitar or the pickups and it is just a small upcharge from a production level price when you order through an Authorized SD dealer.

You may be able to find other pickups that fit the pickup cavity from other manufacturers, the important thing to look for will be the depth, shape and size of the mounting 'tab' on the baseplate.

Arwin - huge help, thank you. If I go the Custom route with one of your dealers, would they need me to make the measurements or would they be able to assist based off the model of the guitar? While I am sure the measurements are straight-forward, don't want to chance giving bad or incorrect info.

I don't think there is a need to provide measurements as long as you cite that is is a Wolfgang model and you need the 'notched' baseplates, that information will be more than enough

Have you tried swapping the bridge for the neck pickup and the neck for the bridge? You could always try that first before buying new ones. The neck pickup, a 44awg 16k monster, in that guitar is more suited as a bridge pickup and vice versa for the neck. All of eds guitars have been like that since the late 90's move to peavey and all of them sound loads better with the pickups reversed. I would try that, you would know in a few hours worth of time, then worry about buying pickups with custom base plates if that really doesn't do it for you.

Have you tried swapping the bridge for the neck pickup and the neck for the bridge? You could always try that first before buying new ones. The neck pickup, a 44awg 16k monster, in that guitar is more suited as a bridge pickup and vice versa for the neck. All of eds guitars have been like that since the late 90's move to peavey and all of them sound loads better with the pickups reversed. I would try that, you would know in a few hours worth of time, then worry about buying pickups with custom base plates if that really doesn't do it for you.

I haven't but it's not a bad idea! Thanks. So far I'm liking what I hearing so I'm not sure there's a big need yet. Wish these were zebra though haha! Nothing some bobbin toppers can't fix though.

I seriously would give it a shot before buying anything new. I have a 97 peavey wolfie, the year they were introduced. Played it for years, but was never 100% happy with the pickups, as the neck was too strong in comparison to the bridge. Later when I knew quite a bit more about electronics and the construction of guitar pickups, I swapped them them and the guitar was a totally new animal! Aggressive and hot in the bridge, and balanced, hot/fat/clear in the neck. I would at least just spend the few hours to try. The only drawback might be that you will have to lengthen the leads of the current bridge pickup to use it in the neck.

So I finally did this today and I think I like it! The bridge seems more articulate, a bit brighter and the neck sings more. The neck is a bit more mushy though for a lack of better terms but it could have been amp settings. I’m going to toy with the pickup heights as best I can tomorrow too.
