I got a brand new shiney nickel for you if you wanna come up off of that.

Re: Pics of the original 808 (big pics)

That is one of the cleanest originals I've seen in a long long time. The PCB even says "Maxon" on it.

I A/B'd my buddy's 808 reissue against my SD-1 converted to 808 specs and I can hardly tell the difference between the two. There is a difference, but it is very small, and most likely due to the fact that I left the asymmetrical clipping in the circuit rather than removing one diode to make it symmetrical. Works for me.

Re: Pics of the original 808 (big pics)

Cool. I see it's got the TI RC4558P op amp (the original 808's either had that or the JRC4558D). I just converted a friend's SD-1 to 808 specs (or at least as close as I could get) and I went with the RC4558P.

As others have said, that's a very very clean pedal for its age!

Be honest, I think I'd rather have mine and pocket the wahtever rediculous sum of money those original units are selling for.

Not quite!

The original had TI RC4558P that were from Japan, this one is from Malaysia.

The JRC4558D came out during the time when TI RC4558P chips were being made in Malaysia and has the better tone.

Re: Pics of the original 808 (big pics)

So how different does the TS-808 reissue sound from the best vintage TS-808 with the most desirable chip?

I have several TS-9's modded by John (Stratdeluxer) to vintage TS-808 specs and when I compare them to my reissue TS-808 they all sound pretty much identical - including the reissue TS-808.

Re: Pics of the original 808 (big pics)

this is the ONLY TS pedal i've ever played...so i really don't have reference for you...i will tell you this...in my rig...it's very transparent...it brings out all the absolute best in my amp and makes every note ring out in the forefront...if that makes sense!? lol!?

Now I know the secret behind the 808!

Watermelon Jelly Bellies!

Actually, those old caps are significantly larger than those in jerryg's TS-9. I'm not into corking sniffing $49 caps in a guitar's tone circuit, but different cap construction will make a difference in tone IMHO.

Of course, the op amp is a key component.

Thanks for sharing those pics guys!
