In addition to the thumb, on acoustic guitar I’ll touch the node point with my index finger and pluck with the thumb. Do the same on bass since I don’t use a pick.

Interesting you are a lefty and the only one that approaches a pick harmonic this way so far. Do you think being left-handed has anything to do with it?

No, way back when when I was a young guitar grasshoppa, trying to get pinchies (after discovering them) with my thumb was more difficult than with the index finger nail.

I stuck to the index finger nail method.

I understand now. I curl my index finger under much further than you. So the way I hold the pick really the thumb is the only answer.

Exactly - my index and thumb form almost a perfect "X" shape. the pick is held in place with the thumb pressing it against the 2nd fingerbone (not the tip) somewhat between the 1st and 2nd knuckle of the index, but mostly the 1st (smaller) knuckle.

the index "hangs out" as much as the thumb.

the other three fingers form a counterweight (if not fingerpicking).

I'm the outsider. The only time I've gotten harmonics while playing (that aren't tap) are from the side of my hand/palm - the edge by my pinky finger, lightly touching the strings.

Pinch harmonics with up stroke with index finger. Now there’s a technique I didn’t know I needed. I always do it downstroke with the back side of my thumb.
