Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Planet Waves are the worst cables in existence.

I've bought 3 from 3 different shops at 3 different times and ALL have broken.

My £5 smart cable still works!!!

I don't recommend Planet Waves to anyone unles you wanna buy a new cable everyday.

The Monster Rock cable on the other hand= bad ass!

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Planet Waves are just one of many choices out there. They are readily available at many stores due to the size of the company. Many better choices out there - many at the same price or less such as Gepco, Mogami, etc...

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Planet Waves are pretty solid cables, they're reliable as heck and sound pretty good to boot. I have other cables that sound better, but I wouldn't say that the sound difference is a landslide or anything. If pros like John Petrucci swear by them for his entire rig, they can't be that bad. Monster cables on the other hand....

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

You guys know Planet waves is a subsidiary of D'Addario dontcha?

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

i'm rockn some pro co cables now. high quality and dirt cheap from partsexpress. besides, all cables are made in the same factory in china so it really doesnt make sense to say one brand is better than another.

Hey....

Does your Retro Coil only come in red?

Is 25ft it's full unwound length?

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

The planet waves circuit breaker cable I had was crap. Period. There is no crimp or soldered conection in there for the hot core wire - it's just a pin pushed straight into the wire. Not good. I found this out after one let me down at a gig and I dismantled it to see what was going on. Never again.
Since then I kitted out with Pete Cornish head to toe. The best I have ever come accross.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

I got a Planet Waves cable but when I muster up the funds I'm gonna get some of Lava Man's Tweed cables. Have you guys seen the thing? Freakin' gorgeous cables right there.

I just looked over the page.

They're nice....but I can't justify the price for what they are and what they do.

I own a hodge podge of cables from a Monster that was given to me as a gift to cables I've assembled from bulk parts and Radio Shack connectors. I had a Planet Waves one for awhile but threw it into the pot to sweeten a deal and the guy took it.

Mostly my concern with a cable is something that not only works when I need it to but can be repaired when it breaks, and be done so on the spot.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

I bought a few Monster cables back in 2003 and love them. Still have all of them. Yeah I paid through the nose for them but between their durability and their difference in sound. I'm going on 5 years with the same cables!

The story goes that after many years of playing crap SS amps through a crap wireless system I decided I wanted a better amp. I bought a Marshall DSL50 and couldn't believe the garbage I was getting out of it. I plugged in a cable and the sound cleared up a lot. after a month or two of playing through this cable it broke. I ventured out and started researchign cables. I found a deal on a 12' Monster Studio Pro 1000. Took it home plugged it in and it was night and day to my ears. Perhaps there isn't a noticeable difference between a standard $10 cable and Monster's lower tier cables but the Studio Pro cables are superb.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

I've been using George L cables for about 5 years now and I have never had a problem. Every once in a while one of the ends loosens up, but a quick tightening of the screw and I'm good to go. I have the thin cables on my pedalboard and I use the heavier ones to connect the amp to board and board to guitar.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Currently using Sommer cable Spirit XXls on pretty much verythin except patch cables. A/B ed them with planet waves and the PWs were mor expensive and had more high end loss with the same length of cable. the spirits just sounded clearer. Don't know about PW durability since i never used them for giggin and stuff but my spirits are near impossible to destroy because of the thick cable itself and the monterous hicon jacks.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Planet Waves are pretty solid cables, they're reliable as heck and sound pretty good to boot.

They aren't reliable if i've bought 3 & all have broke. That's the definition of un-reliable!

If pros like John Petrucci swear by them for his entire rig, they can't be that bad.

John probably uses 1 cable every 2 shows & expects them to break. They cost £15 in the UK so they aren't cheap enough for non-pros to do that.

As i said earlier, my £5 smart cable still works so it's a quality problem with planet waves.

Monster cables on the other hand....

Are great & reliable.

By far the best cables out there.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

I haven't heard a ****m bit of difference between the high-end and the cheap cables.
Planet waves, Monster...Whatever. Haven't tried the GeorgeL's though.
I just recently replaced my cheap cable (dimarzio, I think). It had a short in the middle of the cable. Not worth fixing. But, Whatever broke the cheap cable, would have broke the expensive cable too. (Slammed in a door, I think). 8$, and I'm good to go for another 10 years.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

I'm thinking of just buying a spool of coax and some ends and just making my own cables from now on. It's much more cost effective, it would ensure I can repair them myself, it allows me to customize the lengths to exactly what I need, and they'll probably be better than most cables on the market.

I have a Planet Waves cable going from my guitar to my POD at home. I don't find it better or worse than any cable I already have.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

I run a 20' Planet Waves cable on my big rig, with Monster cable/neutrik plug patch cables between pedals.

Everything in my 'studio' setup is Mogami + Neutrik, and I'd wire up an entire rack and run a 25 or 30' cable of that if I ever play live again.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

I just ordered some D'addario strings & a Planet Waves cable yesterday because Devin Townsend told me to. :p

Well, that & I like experimenting.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Uh, not really. I don't know about other brands, but the Mogami cables I use are made in Japan. I'm pretty sure most higher end cables are not made in China.

i know for a fact that most if not all monster cable is made in china. never heard of mogami but if they are made in japan they are probably hella expensive.

you should,i just buy good quality mic cables (2 conductors + shield) and solder the jacks on myself, they last for years and should something go wrong are easy to fix.the jacks end up costing a lot more than the cable itself, lol.

Re: Planet Waves Instrument Cables FTW!!!!!

Are you tired of having your cables break on you, only to have to solder them again which takes a good deal of time I must say...and then they break again after about a month or two?

Well...

Buy some planet waves cables. Almost impossible to break, and they have a lifetime guarantee anyway, so if one does, go get a new one for free :D

Yeah, I have a circuit breaker 20'. I had to get it fixed 3 times, and after the 3rd the store just gave me a new one and sent the old one back. At least they're rue to the warranty.

As for sonic quality, they're one of if not the best cables. And the circuit breaker is nice for quietly changing instruments.
