Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

That wood cab version is more money, but the one that's around $2150 looks like the Mini and Mighty Plex's that are in the picture behind Ben. Surprising how young he is huh?

I hate playing amps like the VOS, because I know a good tone when I hear one, and then my wheels start turning about how to get one. I aint' gonna find one for a buck fitty at a yardsale, so the only way would be to part with about 3 good pieces of gear. I want one, but I'd have to let go of stuff I love, so I may have to hold off.

If you're into chewy goodness, stay the F away from the VOS!

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Hey Joe, what guitar is Ben playing in that pic? Pretty sweet looking:bigok:

Hey Joe (Gearjoneser)

Man it was great to see you. My apologies if I seemed to a tad grumpy, I had thrown my back out earlier in the week, so I was just hobbling around the warehouse in pain.

Well I'm glad that you got to play the VOS, it's an amazing amp, and especially when a player of your caliber plugs in ( I said "try some VH" so he rips into about 5 tunes, pretty much note for note).

Regarding being surprised at how young Ben Fargen is, I was completely surprised when I first met him, had no idea he was a few years younger than me. But this is a guy who's been building amps since he was in his teens, so his experience is beyond his years, he's just one of those "wizards" who really is into it, and the final product is just outstanding in my opinion.

Dude, you gotta cruise by the warehouse again soon, maybe some evening when you can jam longer. The studio will be done in a few months too, so if you got tracks to lay down, we can accomodate.

Take care,
Todd Richards

Todd.....good to see you stop by!!!:beerchug:

Your "Buddy" there points folks in your general direction all the time....good to see you're an actual "person" & not Joe in drag:laugh2:

(Then again, how would we know that????..................)

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Joe in drag, now that's a truly scary thought!

Thanks it's a great forum, and I should participate a bit more. My issue with forums is that I get too darn interested, then they kind of take over so much time so I don't get any guitar playing done! So I have to watch myself with that, cause I can talk gear all day.

Well I appreciate all the referrals that Gearjoneser has pointed in my direction. It's a small business, so every customer is a big deal to me. Joe's a real knowledgeable cat, and a real player too. I'm always watching this cool right hand technique that he's got, it's not chickin pickin, but it's a unique hybrid style-works well for him, gotta steal technique wherever I can!

Todd,

good to see you stop in. If/when Joe decides to come by (or is that buy?), let me know. If I'm in the LA area, I'll come by as well.

sorry about your back.

To the rest of you: I've seen the warehouse and it truly is that. Dude has so many tubes lined up in boxes, it'd make you cry!

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Scott, Would be great to see you again, if you're out here on business, just give me a holler.

The warehouse has changed dramatically since you were there, about 2/3 rds of it is now a recording studio under construction. So I had to build a lot of shelves and get more organized with the other 1/3 rd left for Revolution Guitar.

Anyway, if you come by, you've got to plug into the VOS. For years guys have been attempting to get the "brown" sound in a boutique amp, finally someone has done it, it's really that good.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Hey Todd, cool to see you post on here from time to time. I didn't even get the impression you were feeling under the weather....I just knew it was a regular workday for you, plus I was fixated on that VOS! Next time I come over, I want to check out the line of pedals you rave about...Nick Greer pedals. I wanna hear the Sonic Boom OD into that Fargen.

It's so hard for me to get clips of my tube amps, since my studio is setup in an apartment.....I can only record with the damn modeling amp. I've got a lot of good mics, so once your studio is functional, maybe we should line up all our best amps and start dialing in the studio by making a ton of clips for your site, for Ben Fargen, and for the Tips'n'Clips section of this site.

I've got about 6 good amps, but Todd's got half a room of old Marshalls, Fenders, Mesas, GT's, Fargens, and probably more I haven't seen.

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Hey Joe, Yep I've got too many amps I guess, but you're not far behind, hehe. I do need to thin the herd, but just when I think I'm ready to let one go, I get that "well it's really good for_____" and maybe I'll use it in the studio. In reality I only play a few fargens, my silver jubilees, and the occasional super champ of subway blues, so it's a shame to see many of them collecting dust.

Regarding the clips, great idea, would be a useful too for me, for Ben, this site, and whoever else might need them.

Yeah the Nick Greer pedals are very cool, some better than others-for my use. The guy has a real sophisticated ear, It's the sort of thing where if you plugged in each of his pedals at low volume, they all sound very similar, but at playing volume they all have their own thing. I really should have had the sonic boom out when you were over, it's outstanding.

When I first got the sonic boom prototype, I called Nick and told him he wasn't getting it back, which he didn't appreciate I think, but he got over it. I still use it at home everyday.

I just got a Nick Greer amp head too called the Underdog 15, it's great. Bascially it's probably the best sounding bassman around, real organic, but it's a rocker for sure. It's a one trick pony, but it's a very cool trick, would be great amp for the roots rocker player.

It would take some time to go through all his pedals, but whenever you have an afternoon to kill, just let me know and we'll plug em in.

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

yo todd you are so right about those NICK GREER pedals the sonic boom ! just kicks the bloody hell out of an amp and makes it scream !!!!!!!!!

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Shred-dog, Yeah it's cool for just slamming the input of the amp for more signal level. I actually really just like the sound of the pedal in the signal chain, it's got a nice warm character. Usually I have it set about normal, don't even use it as a boost, I just turn it on, and leave it on. But yeah turn it up and you can get some real cool gain out of the amp that you wouldn't know was available.

if we plan this right, I'll get one or three of my amps out there as well... can't let Fargen get all the free pub and clips! :)

hey rev,

What are the subway blues like? - I have a Blue Angel and love it, but have only come across subway rockets, which sound pretty mark-series cludgy to me...

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

To Scott - Yeah lets talk about it, I checked out your site, looks like you're making some cool hand built amps!

To Hot Grits, Yeah I like the subway blues amps, they are non master volume, have a real sweet clean tone at low volume, the reverb is quite good also. Turn it up and the grind is more marshall-esque than boogie-ish. The down side to them is that they do sound a bit boxy, but run em into a 4 x12 and they really sound huge, nice rock or blues tone available from half way up on the volume. The sweet spot is at about 7, after that you hit a bit of compression (which can be fun too!), surprisingly loud for 18 watts or so. I've found that these amps change character a lot with different preamp tubes, with all amps there's a difference, but it's really evident with these for some reason.

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

That damn VOS is haunting me now! I was listening to some Robben Ford (his Dumble), and realized that a Dumble Overdrive Special isn't too different from the VOS. If the gain is high on the VOS, it's more Marshall-like, but I have a feeling that the VOS can have the master high, and the gain lower, and it'll sound just like a Dumble, since it's also an EL-34 amp with a rectifier tube. It's got a similar vibe, when it comes to EQ and fatness. I have this really bad feeling that I'm gonna sell 2 amps and a guitar!

Re: Played the Fargen flagship amp today....The VOS!!!

Hey Joe, Yep I hear ya, I'm giddy when I play the VOS, haven't been this way about an amp since I got my first jubilee. And it's not just me and you, everyone that's plugged into it has just raved, I'm surprised I still have one left.

First Ben got it to sound like the best marshall, but then he tweaked it more to have a bit of dumble-ness in the sustain, when it's dialed right, the sustain is almost violin-like. Plus he really listened to very slight things, like the way the note blooms with a good two rock, and tweaked it some more to get that sound. I gotta say that Billy Gibbons styled stuff you were playing sounded pretty hot, definate authentic tone for that and more.
