Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

I jam on my own and usually use a radio or some such in my basement with my amp. I had some crappy iPod speakers that just conked out and I'm looking for a good option to jam with my big rig in the basement. Is there a way to play my iPod through my 50/50 on one if it's channels through maybe on of my cabinets? I've read that this is possible with an adapter, but want to get everyone's thoughts or any other options for jamming loud with an iPod/MP3 player. Thanks!

Sure, why not? Just make sure that you don't have the output from you iPod above unity gain.

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

Thanks man. Anyone recommend a good adapter? I think I need one that goes from my iPod headphones to the amp.

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

That is correct. Any audio adapter will do the trick from Best Buy, Radio Shack, et al

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

Thanks again! I'm either not searching right or just not finding it but the only thing I find is the iRig thing from Apply. What else would work?

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

You need a stereo male 1/8 inch to mono male 1/4 inch plug or some similar combination of adapters.

I monitor audio through my Polytone Mini Brute III when I record via my Line 6 PODX3Live into my PC through it's USB output since the monitor driver must be the same as the input driver when USB recording. It works just fine... your Mesa will most likely color the signal a bit but it might sound surprisingly nice.

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

Thanks guys. I ordered that item from Amazon along with a Planet Waves 1/8 to 1/4 adapter. I'm going to run it through one of my cabinents and 50/50 so we'll see how it goes! Thing is, I also have an old Crest solid state power amp that I could use to power it. If I can get my hands on a cheap 1X12 or 2x12 then I could just use that with the speakers as well. I've read that solid state might be better to run something like this, but we'll see. I'm not terribly concerned about sound quality to be honest. I just need LOUD.

Wow. Thanks for the input guys. For 16 freaking dollars this works like a charm! The only issue I've run into so far in my limit test is that on some albums, like Iron Maiden's Live After Death only one of the guitars is coming out. I'm thinking that this is a minor price to pay for spending a very low amount of cash to play extremely loud with my iPod but I wonder if there's a way to fix this. I got the cable that TwilightOdessy is linking above with a Planet Waves 1/8 to 1/4 stereo adapter.

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

Sounds like you need a similar adapter but stereo on one end and a Y on the other (2 mono, left and right) for each side of the 50/50.

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

But you will be missing lotsa high frequencies. Unless your cab has a horn or tweeter.

Re: Playing My iPod Through My Mesa 50/50

Personally I'd shell out a little bit extra money and try to snag one of these little Peavey KB amps. I have one that I use for my keyboard but when I'm just jamming, I plug my phone or ipod into it and use it to keep the volume up. They're pretty rugged, very cheap (used), and put out plenty of volume.

I found a KB 60 fo about $125 on craigslist that I may try to snag. I'd spend more than that on iPod speakers that can keep up with my amp. Thanks for the advice!

What Ipod model you have? I have an old 3rd gen Ipod Touch and there's an option under the Accessibility section that let's you remix the output signal to mono and send it to both channels (left and right).

It's under Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing > Mono Audio

Thanks man I'll take a look. Mine is older than that so it might not have that option.

This is all you need.

Your guitar amp will be a mono input, so that's why you were missing one channel.

You need a 1/8" Stereo --> 1/4" Mono cable.

I have no earthly idea why TwilightOdyssey recommended you a 30 pin dock connector to 1/8" and then 1/8" to 1/4". You just need one simple $5 cable.

Yeah, I detailed what he needed in post #7... my post count isn't high enough for the OP to take me seriously apparently. His loss.

Indeed!

Thank you for trying to help him, at least

I find that having a mostly naked man in my avatar draws the eye.

Not that he listened to me either

Lol no need to get bent out of shape my friend. There were a lot of posts here and I truly appreciate everyone's input. I will definitely try this route. I'm just really exploring all of my options.

Thanks,
Jeff

Popped by Radio Shack on the way home and picked on up. Actually they only had a mono to mono but I bought a stereo adapter. Total cost only around $7! Tried it with my power amp, worked like a charm! Thanks guys!
