Re: Please guide my foolish thoughts..
In view of your PayPal Credit thread in Off-Topic, can you actually afford any of these guitars that you don't actually need? :scratchch
Depends on the payment. If its within a certain limit, I can swing it. If not, then no, Im just window shopping! I will have to wait til I sell a few more things Im moving and get it then.
My hero uses a V. I love Vs. I have owned 4 Vs. I love the way they look, play, and sound.
They are uncomfortable as can be for me. Even standing up. Hate the way they hang and flop all over the place. That's why Schenker plays them the way he does...
I get frustrated with them. Be aware of the comfort factor. Try before you buy.
thanks for the insight! But yeah, at one time or another, Ive owned a Dean V, a Gibson faded V an a Kramer Rhoads shaped one. And, have played the King V shape. And, I can deal with it, but that is why they got sold when they did as they werent at the tops of my playing list and I needed to thin out. But, I like em none the less.
Definitely more for looks than ergonomics, for sure.
If you're getting a non-Gibson V, I'd say get a non-Gibson V shape - King V-style, etc (though a Rhoads-style might be even worse for ergonomics, in my experience).
And I hear you about sour deals from brand names. That's one of the reasons I'll never own another Ibanez product and will bash them until Chtulu awakens.
Maybe when Gibson wises up and puts out a Floyded rear-loaded 24 fretter with good upper fret access (instead of scooting the neck pickup back another inch) with block or split parallelogram or split diamond inlays, and an ebony, dark rosewood (not that lighter crap), or maple board on the neck profile from a '62 SG, I'll consider them, but the 4 Gibvees I've owned could have been done a lot better.
The V90 was close, but they're hard to find now, and most I've seen only had one pickup and a trem you can't find replacement parts for, or swap for an OFR.
Yeah, the last real Gibby LP I bought... Was the 3rd down on the list of the Gibson LP of my dreams. (the first 2 are either very rare and hard to get, and very expensive and the other is just way too expensive. Anyhow, the one I got was also very expensive, but I had sold a bunch and had means to do it at that time. So, I ordered it from a dealer. (at NO discounts at all) Waited forever for it. Then Gibson came back and said we discontinued that model and tried to get me to take a new standard instead.. Well, the order was in before they discontinued, so the dealer pushed them to build it. After about 3 months, it came in. Was so excited. Went to get it, sales guys were celebrating, (patting themselves on the back for getting Gibson to build it) they handed me the case and said so long, enjoy. I said not so fast. Took it out and checked it out. There were very obvious flaws on it. Sent it back... Gibson again balked at rebuilding it. Discontinued... More back and forth. Few months later, new one comes. No flaws, but the top wasnt nearly as nice, and the tone accoustically sounded very plinky and it didnt have the bark and sustain of a good LP. Sold it at a loss..
Prior to that, I had wanted a Traditional Pro. I really wanted a black one. Went to shop, played a bunch, including a wine red one. None of the black ones sounded close to the wine red one.. Out of the bunches of them I played, it have that beefy sound I expect from a LP. Its mine now. But it was like a needle in the haystack and not the color I wanted, but I couldnt deny how good it sounded. So, between those two things, especially the first scenario, Im not in a hurry to take a gamble with them again.
Anyhow, probably more info than you wanted, but thats why. I rather support US biz when I can, and avoid supporting "knock off" type of stuff, but I cant afford to pay thousands extra just to do that either..
