Please guide my foolish thoughts..

Ok, Ill start by saying that I need another guitar like I need a 2x4 whack to the skull. But, I WANT one more Charvel, another LP (of some sort) and a V for different pickup combos and colors. If I could purchase only one, what should it be?

The pros:
I dont have a V. Plus, after watching a live vid of the Scorpions last night....... haha.

The Lp im looking at is blue and I desperately want to replace the blue one I sold. Plus I have a set of pups I wanna use in the LP.

The Charvel Im looking at is a cool color I dont have and will run a diff pickup combo. Charvel necks are my fav.

Part of me says V cuz I dont have one, but, Id get more use out of the LP or Charvel..

The cons:

I dont need any.. haha

So, your thoughts??

Re: Please guide my foolish thoughts..

Well, technically you can use the pups for the LP in the V as well, right?

Otherwise, either the LP ('cuz you already have the pups you want for it), or the Charvel (*IF* it gives you options you don't already have).

Re: Please guide my foolish thoughts..

I own a one V, six Les Pauls, and three Charvels. If I was going to buy another guitar it would most likely be another Charvel. I absolutely love them, and I don't worry about banging them up.

Im still A@al about banging them up, but I love the charvels too. The necks are like butta.. I love it Jolly.. You were a pretty die hard Gibson LP guy (with a couple of cherry Epis) not long ago and now you have become pretty sold on the Charvels..Got anything recorded with your charvels?

Another point to make in my orignal debate is Im looking at a Edwards LP and V. Def cant afford brand G.. Thats why I said of some sort in my orig post.. So, Im looking about the same amount of money whichever direction I go.

Vs aren't for everyone. I've had several over the years and so far have only found 3 I get along with - an older late 70s Vantage FV575, though that one has very small frets, a USA KV2T with 24 3/4" scale, but seriously needs a Floyd, and a recent Indonesian Jackson neckthrough KVMG, but I'm sure the quality on those is inconsistent. Still, ebony board, finlays, Floyd, oiled neck.

If you've got a Charvel SoCal or San Dimas, then you've got them. Great necks, but as someone who had 6 at one time in all various colors, color variety is all you're getting.

I cannot in good conscience endorse Edwards' Gibson copies. A copy is a copy, and will always be a copy. There's nothing about them I could consider an update to the originals. Gibson Les Pauls are expensive (needlessly IMO) but look around for a bargain. I bought one used in 1994 that was only a year old for $1050 and sold it about 10 years later for the same price.

Re: Please guide my foolish thoughts..

Yeah bro, I feel you. I do love my Charvels tho!! I also know what you are saying about copys. And thats a whole 'nother discussion. And normally try not to support or encourage that sort of thing.. But, I want to get the best guitar I can AFFORD, and since also since there arent many decent used choices near me, I feel more confident that the quality wont be hit or miss. I still love and support brand G (have 2) but, they pretty well soured me with my last dealing with them. just sayin..

In view of your PayPal Credit thread in Off-Topic, can you actually afford any of these guitars that you don't actually need? :scratchch

Re: Please guide my foolish thoughts..

i need a v for sure. I was looking through some of the older pictures from my build and i came to the conclusion that it would have been just as cool without the bamboo and just all V like.

next time aiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Re: Please guide my foolish thoughts..

My hero uses a V. I love Vs. I have owned 4 Vs. I love the way they look, play, and sound.

They are uncomfortable as can be for me. Even standing up. Hate the way they hang and flop all over the place. That's why Schenker plays them the way he does...

I get frustrated with them. Be aware of the comfort factor. Try before you buy.

Re: Please guide my foolish thoughts..

Definitely more for looks than ergonomics, for sure.

If you're getting a non-Gibson V, I'd say get a non-Gibson V shape - King V-style, etc (though a Rhoads-style might be even worse for ergonomics, in my experience).

And I hear you about sour deals from brand names. That's one of the reasons I'll never own another Ibanez product and will bash them until Chtulu awakens.

Maybe when Gibson wises up and puts out a Floyded rear-loaded 24 fretter with good upper fret access (instead of scooting the neck pickup back another inch) with block or split parallelogram or split diamond inlays, and an ebony, dark rosewood (not that lighter crap), or maple board on the neck profile from a '62 SG, I'll consider them, but the 4 Gibvees I've owned could have been done a lot better.

The V90 was close, but they're hard to find now, and most I've seen only had one pickup and a trem you can't find replacement parts for, or swap for an OFR.

Depends on the payment. If its within a certain limit, I can swing it. If not, then no, Im just window shopping! I will have to wait til I sell a few more things Im moving and get it then.

thanks for the insight! But yeah, at one time or another, Ive owned a Dean V, a Gibson faded V an a Kramer Rhoads shaped one. And, have played the King V shape. And, I can deal with it, but that is why they got sold when they did as they werent at the tops of my playing list and I needed to thin out. But, I like em none the less.

Yeah, the last real Gibby LP I bought... Was the 3rd down on the list of the Gibson LP of my dreams. (the first 2 are either very rare and hard to get, and very expensive and the other is just way too expensive. Anyhow, the one I got was also very expensive, but I had sold a bunch and had means to do it at that time. So, I ordered it from a dealer. (at NO discounts at all) Waited forever for it. Then Gibson came back and said we discontinued that model and tried to get me to take a new standard instead.. Well, the order was in before they discontinued, so the dealer pushed them to build it. After about 3 months, it came in. Was so excited. Went to get it, sales guys were celebrating, (patting themselves on the back for getting Gibson to build it) they handed me the case and said so long, enjoy. I said not so fast. Took it out and checked it out. There were very obvious flaws on it. Sent it back... Gibson again balked at rebuilding it. Discontinued... More back and forth. Few months later, new one comes. No flaws, but the top wasnt nearly as nice, and the tone accoustically sounded very plinky and it didnt have the bark and sustain of a good LP. Sold it at a loss..

Prior to that, I had wanted a Traditional Pro. I really wanted a black one. Went to shop, played a bunch, including a wine red one. None of the black ones sounded close to the wine red one.. Out of the bunches of them I played, it have that beefy sound I expect from a LP. Its mine now. But it was like a needle in the haystack and not the color I wanted, but I couldnt deny how good it sounded. So, between those two things, especially the first scenario, Im not in a hurry to take a gamble with them again.

Anyhow, probably more info than you wanted, but thats why. I rather support US biz when I can, and avoid supporting "knock off" type of stuff, but I cant afford to pay thousands extra just to do that either..
