Back Story:
I wanted a guitar like Ace Frehley since I was 10.
At 13 I got a Cherry Sunburst Standard. Close but not quite. At 40 I got a 73 Tobacco burst. Extremely close - but wrong guitar. So I was talking w/ Evan and he was telling about his 50th birthday guitar. I thought - special guitar for 50, that's a cool Idea. Maybe a Three pickup Custom?
Then my dad died last March. He got me the original. He also made me hate playing, miserable country music loving bastard. Then again, he'd have got me this one if it existed then. Anyway, the divorce and such is settling down. I paid a bunch of bills/debt. Hooked the kids up right this season. I started surfing the bay for Frehley guitars.
One afternoon I went to my local Sam Ash (where I got the 73 a decade ago). I asked Satan's KISS guitar pimp (Danny Russo, Sales Manager and KISS fan like me) if they had anything. Ebay stuff is pretty iffy, at that range, if you know what i mean. He looks it up and sure enough, they have one. Just one.
"Yes we do. Only been opened once to be examined, photographed, and put back in the vault. And check it out - number 016. Christine Sixteen!"
And that, of course, sealed my fate.
It's a year early for 50, but nearly 40 years late for a 10 year old. My dad never saw me play anything before he died. He'd like a lot of the solo acoustic things I do. I'd have had him down this Christmas if he were still here, whether he wanted to travel or not. I'd have set up a gig at my local bar. He'd hate everything I'd play on this though. And that's probably how a KISS guitar should be to a dad. I miss the old man. I'll think of him whenever I pick this up though…So while that guitar is around, he'll always sort of be around saying "Turn that thing to normal!" - meaning distortion off playing Glenn Campbell.
So that's the back story.
Anyway - as said in American Beauty….
