Please recommend me a bridge pickup for my Godin guitar

Hi there,

I have a Godin Exit 22, which is a fixed-bridge H-S-S guitar with mahogany body and rosewood fingerboard. Generally I like the guitar, but one thing I don't like much about it is the bridge humbucker which has a bit of mid-honk, so I'm thinking about replacing it.

I want a tight modern metal rhythm sound from the bridge, but still want it to be capable of other styles (pop and funk, mostly), so something too hot might not work well. I'm keeping the single coils, though.

Is Duncan Custom good for this kind of sound I'm looking for? As I don't have any experience in changing pickups, any suggestions of other models or even other brands are very welcome.

Thanks,
Poonna

Edit: Just in case so you know, I have no real amps. I'm using it with Line 6 Toneport and a monitor speaker.

Hi and welcome!

The custom would be a very nice pick-up in that guitar IMO. Tight and crunchy with a good lower-end as well as nice highs and mids. It is my favorite bridge pick-up at the moment, I have it in two almost identical mahogany lp-type guitars. Very nice under gain while cleaning up nicely with a little roll-off of the tone and volume... Even though it is a higher output pick-up, it does retain some PAF flavor, making it a somewhat versatile pick-up...

If I remember correctly, some Godin's (LG?) had a duncan bridge pick-up which is now referred to as the Custom-5. Same pick-up as the Custom, except with an alnico5 magnet. It didn't do much for me but there are tons of folks over here who swear by this pick-up in mahogany guitars. Nice bass and highs, kinda scooped mids (to my ears at least). I'll let other shime in to praise this pick-up...

IMHO, the custom would be a nice place to start...

Welcome to the forum. :)

I recommend you try out the Screamin Demon in your guitar. It's tight with lots of chunk in the lows and airy mids. Also, its output isn't too hot, so it'll blend well with the single coils.

Thanks for all the recommendations here. I'll probably start with Duncan Custom first. Hopefully it will turn out to be a good match and not too hot to blend with my single coils. :)

If you want, you might want to try the Custom 5 (a custom with an Alnico 5 magnet in them).

Clean, jangly, and poppy, can get seriously.. er.. funky, on the clean.

But its still a high output pup, and sounds great and tight for all of your metal needs. It has a little less percieved output than the Custom so it might even balance better.
