please tell me it was just the room...

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

if you have a pa just mic the thing set up for as loud as you normal play at home while maintaining good tone then just stick the mic in the back of the cab and use it to project your sound more.

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

hire a practice room somewhere and see if you have the same problem.....

might be the room, might not... get a 2nd opinion (room) at that volume...

what are the walls and ceiling constructed of???

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

When you say "buzz", drew, you're not talking about a 60 cycle hum, right? I assume that you are saying that it's more driven than you would like. Do I have that right?

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

More mids = more "buzz"?

Sounds like you're turning up the amp and it's clipping. Another possibility is a bad speaker. You might try out the amp with a different cab (assuming it's not a combo).

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

lets see

its not the speakers themselves, they're fine

no its not 60 cycle hum

cieling & walls are...drywall i guess, i dunno

can't mic it cuz i play at small/medium sized venues & that'd just look...weak, no one else does it

but yes i did notice that when i turned off the pedal the amp was clipping just a little bit, but i just had it retubed with the highest headroom groove tube 6l6r's i could find, so theres not a lot else i can do

the buzz isn't really too much gain, more like...notes getting slurred together

and i play kind of a mix of punk, rockabilly, psychobilly, and grindcore

i dunno, the more i think about it, the more i think closing the back would help, i had to crank it for MORE projection cuz the drummer is pretty loud, given the bassist wasn't there but still

Most bands where i live mic thier stuff and thats all small venue's, who care if u have a mic stood infront of ur amp if it gets you the tone you like?

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

where are the settings on your master and volume?

it depends on what kind of band you have, but if your vocals are up to snuff, I'd suggest setting your levels based on clear vocal levels - that's better than just playing loud, and trying to compete with the vocals

just my opinion, if you want to set your band apart from most bands that have loud music with vocals that can't be heard

your amp problem is solvable, though ... look for a good clean level with master high, volume to suit, before adding your pedal into the mix ... just some basic trouble shooting will get you there ....
UNLESS, as some suggested, your band may be just playing too loud

so, turn down a little, work for clear vocals, and good band dynamics ;)

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

we're not playing way too loud

when cranked its just barely over the drums

amp too small? eh jeez, i REALLY REALLY hope its not that, i just bought this thing

i realize a 4x12 would prolly give me more clarity, and DEFINATELY a 3db increase, but thats sort of a last resort option, if i get a 4x12 thats gonna delay my sending it to jeff for mods, and i feel like i've kept him waiting too long already

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

I'd think that 2 - 75 w - 12s would give you plenty of power to get cleans with that amp

check your master and volume settings

Maybe your drummer needs to chill out.

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

Man I seriously don't think that closing the back would help. I have played with a drummer, bassit, and another guitarist and my open back 18 watt 2X10 cut through beautifully. Even with 2 other guitarists and a drummer it cut better than anything else. I'd try the EQ pedal.

its not the volume setting, i've already messed with that

I'll hafta take a look at the speakers, i put em in myself so i may have screwed up on the shielding, who knows

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

nope, checked em, both working fine

given they are pretty new but I've been putting a lot of volume through them so they should be pretty broken in by now

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

i hope its running in parallel

Make sure that one speaker's positive and negative are going to the other speaker's positive and negative. And the speaker cable is connected to the 2nd speaker's positive and negative into your output.

speaker 1+ to speaker 2+, speaker 1- to speaker 2-, speaker 2 to amp.

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

and what is this shielding that you speak of?

when installing new speakers all you need to do is mount and connect in parallel....

Did you buy the right ohm speakers for your amp?

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

yeah its wired right, 4 ohms. and they're both 8 ohm speakers

and i'm using a combo amp as a cab so i had to solder in an 1/8" plug, get a like ends adaptor, and run a speaker cable from one to the other

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

couldnt you have simply bought a phone>speaker prong cable and connected it to the speakers in back?

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

yeah, hm, forgot about that, oh well

anyhoo, wow this is embarassing, but while i was checkin out the speakers i noticed the hot & ground wires were kinda...shot, there was quite a few wires that should have been connected to the lead that were just totally broken off

so does anyone know where i can buy wires with the leads on them? This very well could be the source of the problem

Re: please tell me it was just the room...

Are you sure it isn't the tubes? Maybe they weren't broken in correctly.

Also, if you're trying to get max clean headroom, 7581's are the way to go. They're just the industrial strength version of the 6L6GC. Same specs, except for a 35w plate dissipation instead of the 6L6GC's 30. If you're looking for max clean, you won't be able to get much more from a perfectly matched pair of NOS JAN Philips 7581A power tubes with a balanced 12AT7 phase inverter.
