Plexitone...

Has anybody had experience with this pedal?

I am still hunting for a two channel overdrive/disto pedal, since the SFX-03 hasn't touch Europe yet.

I tried the Bulldog lately and was relly disappointed, the overdrive was nice as in the Big Ben overdrive, but the disto was thin sounding... It wan't actually bad, but there was defenitely something not right.

BTW, that is funny how I am influenced by tone. I didn't know what to play while trying the pedal (which is not so astonishing as I almost always feel this way in a shop). But then for comparison sake I tried the disto from the amp and the got started to play around the neck freely!

Anyway... your take on the plexitone please.

Re: Plexitone...

i have one.
i play it through my laney lc15r
and i think my distortion quest is over..
i also played it through a marshall bluesbreaker at the shop and it was killer
its a big and loud pedal
you can use the boost and crunch as separate channels
or use them both for a higher gain sound
it can get that tube-like sagginess, but its not sloppy
in fact, it has just the right amount of tightness
the high gain side might not seem different at first, but it is a bit more scooped than the crunch channel
try and see if it works for you

a million thanks to Rid who designed it

Re: Plexitone...

This pedal is quite possibly one of the best pedals I've ever plugged into. Very useful all around. I find myself leaving the boost on even when I'm not using the crunch/high gain channels. The crunch channel has that classic Marshallesque growl to it and on the high gain channel w/ mids up and and a little tweaking you can nail almost 80's hair metal tone. I don't know how much more different mine is from a stock PT, but the one I have is definately not EVER going to leave my pedalboard ;)

Re: Plexitone...

^About the same in the basics, just with some added goodies.
Actually the second channel on a Plexi is fatter, the "scoop" is no scoop, but it is designed for high mids, like a Marshall, some may see that as scoop, but it is not:)
Sometimes it just depends on the amp and speakers for that.

That is exactly what I would use it for: Putting it in front of my LC15R.

Problemis that in Edinburgh, there is no way I am gonna get hold of a unit for a wee test! The only thing that I am not sure aboutwith this pedal are:
Can the crunch channel deliver some nice break up sound, in between clean and overdriven?
Is the high gain channel versatile enough not to sound like 80's hair metal all the time? Because honestly, I can't stand this tone.

Re: Plexitone...

Thanks Rid. It sounds like a serious option to me.

May I just ask you if the AC-tone has a common ground with the plexi tone? I mean, could I found some of the Ac-tone by tweaking around on the plexi tone, or they are just too different?
I know, I am a bit of a pain, I ambasically looking for a do it all pedal from sweet break up to punchy hard rock disto.

I really need to try one now.

Re: Plexitone...

The AC-Tone only do as much/less gain as a TS-Style drive, nah well they are both very British in tone, but the Plexi is a gnarly fat bitey beast, while the AC-Tone is much more sweet like the namesake EL-84 amp, think Brian May vs any Marshall oldstyle sound you can think of:)
But if you do use LP's as you do, they can coach more fatness out of the AC-Tone, but it is still a very mild drive next to the Plexi.

Re: Plexitone...

i have what i call an AC-Plex...which is kind of a combo between the two and i have yet to think 80's when i use mine on either channel...it's gonna depend on how you play and what you play! i use mine in front of a Blues Jr. and couldn't be happier at all!!

Will there be a Tweed-Tone pedal as well? ;) :)

Re: Plexitone...

The Plexitone rocks! I have a Duplexer Prototype Plexitone, a wonderful gift from Rid, and it has made the 2 drive channels on my amp redundant!

Re: Plexitone...

I had never found an OD pedal I wanted to keep until I got my Plexi. Now I use it more than the OD on my amp. I love it !

Re: Plexitone...

PLexi-Tone= best marshall tones in a box EVAR :bigthumb:

Rid has really managed to capture the essence of a PLexi in that little black box...its warm and sparkly...its crunchy and sweet....it's got chunk, and its got twang...just like the real deal...its the most tube-like sounding pedal that doesn't use a tube I've ever encountered. Its a damned amazing pedal, if ya ask me.

If I was more of a "plexi guy" I'd never have sold it...ie. If I was a classic rocker or wanted the "brown sound"...I'm just more into the Metalface/JMP/800 tones. But I'd buy another in a friggin heartbeat if I needed plexi-tones :D

Re: Plexitone...

Hehe well not quite Tweed, more like just American voiced, more low mids and still clear, I have almost nailed the sound I want from it today actually.

Man . . . that sounds great !

Let us know as soon as you release that unit onto the world !
Would love to hear that monster !:smokin:

Re: Plexitone...

Well thanks guys;)
Erm well it survived day two....which is a good sign, I had a small worry that it might was a tad too fat...but then again my small 15watt amp liked it....and I played it some more on different amps, I am not going to change a thing now!
It is not wildly gainy, but it is very very fat and warm, plus still has enough clarity and bite for my taste!
Here is a standalone clip of the pedal....just used my homesetup here...our computer for recording at work is being upgraded with a new soundcard, so I could not record it with a tubeamp!
So this is directly into my Marshall DRP-1.
