POD XT users

For those who own an XT, Line 6 have released the 2.0 upgrade (which is free), along with optional expansion packs. I've just bought mine, and it cost me around £50, but considering I've got 36 new amp models (18 of which are high gain  ), and 30 new effects, it's a pretty good deal in my eyes. I'll post a follow up review as to how the new models, and the new version in itself sounds when I've had some time to play with it. Sorry if this has been posted recently, but I haven't had time to check in on the boards much as of late.

Expansion packs???

Do they have any of the HD147 models on there perchance? *Muha Muhahaha*

Yes, as far as I know many of the 18 extra high gain tones come from the HD147....I've just been noodling around for the last half an hour or so and so far I'm impressed. There are a couple of Bogner models, a couple of Marshall ones, a Diezel, an ENGL and there's a 5150 in there somewhere, amongst others (I'm yet to decipher the silly names), but I've spent the majority of my time playing with the "Big Bottom" tone, which sounds absolutely crushing.

Re: POD XT users

the 2.0 upgrade is free and gives you four more amp models, plus redone cab and mike models. You also get post-eq and double the presets (I guess they opened up some memory we didn't know we had in there... =))

there are also three new optional module packs you can buy - currently they each sell for 50 bucks and if you buy two you get the third free. They come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

the first is a metal pack - which takes 18 amp models (including one bogner) from the HD147, etc. The second is a classic amp pack, which includes the other bogner model. The third pack is I think 32 new effects. If you get them all your POD has something like 72 amps and 84 effects... it's pretty insane...

I'm going to buy the packs tonight. I tried out the upgrade last night. Definitely time well spent. The cab and mic models sound way better. The mesa dual rectifier model sounds way better, way tighter. Plus they also include a version of the dual rectifier model from POD 2.0 which everyone liked so much. The cleaner models sound more alive. I liked the old Jazz Clean model, but the new one sounds even better...

Re: POD XT users

And for the idiot in me ...

Can the upgrades be done to the Flextone II series of amplifiers do you know (I'll go check the website anyway)?

and if so how do you merge/utilise/get them in the POD?

EDIT

Ok this stuff is for the XT's only ... damn

hmmmm. sounds like I need to chunk the POD Pro and get a POD Pro XT for even more crushing tone... :)

MrHM :smokin:

Re: POD XT users

dude I have to say - the PODXT is now a super metal machine... After listening to all the metal models alone even my buddy was like, ****! :D

You use software tools to load the data into the POD - but the flextone II is a different beast altogether... You should check to see if they have software upgrades for the II - I know they came out with a III patch recently that everyone says greatly enhanced the sound...

Re: POD XT users

Well, I've been playing around with my XT most of last night and this night, and I'm in more of a position to judge it now.

Firstly, the models included in the new packs are...

High gain:
Bogner '02 Uberschall, Cornford '03 mk50h, Diezel '03 VH4-Lead, Diezel '03 Herbert, ENGL '02 Powerball, Marshall '87 Silver Jubilee, Marshall '92 JCM-900-Clean, Marshall '92 JCM-900-Dist, Marshall '03 JCM-2000, Mesa Boogie '01 Triple Rectumfrier, Peavey '02 5150 II, L6 Big Bottom, L6 Chunk Chunk, L6 Fuzz, L6 Octone, L6 Smash, L6 Sparkle Cln, L6 Throttle

Collector Classics:
Bogner '02 Ecstasy, Diezel '03 VH4-Crunch, Fender '63 Vibroverb, Fender '67 Dual Showman Head, Fender '72 Bassman Head, Fender '96 Mini Twin, Gibson '60 GA-18 Explorer, Marshall '68 Super Bass, Marshall '69 Major, Silvertone '67 Twin Twelve, Supro '62 Thunderbolt, L6 Bayou, L6 Crunch, L6 Purge, L6 Sparkle, L6 Super Cln, L6 SuperSpark, L6 Twang

There's also a shatload of new effects should you choose to buy the pack, but I really can't be arsed to type them all out unless someone explicitly asks me to. Some of the things achievable with the effects are utterly crazy, including one effect which, when dialed in a certain way, causes pinch harmonics to sound like a sheep baa-ing. No really.....

As to the upgrade to version 2 itself, there is a great deal of improvement. The mic and cab sims are vastly improved, and the addition of a semi-parametric post-EQ is most welcome. The high gain tones all sound more "in your face", and less fizzy.

The true mark of the improvement in the XT is the speed with which I was able to dial in a decent patch after updating. Previously, I had to tweak for hours at a time until I had a satisfactory tone, whereas now I can create a decent patch in 2 minutes flat.

As to the new amp models, I'm very impressed with the vast majority. "Big Bottom" is one of my early favourites, as it compliments my style and gear pretty much to a tee. I really like the Diezel Herbert model also, along with the Lunatic (which comes free with the v2.0 update) and 5150.

I'm not too impressed with the "L6 Treadplate" (which comes free with the v2.0 update), which still sounds nowhere near as good as the Rectumfrier model found on the Pod 2.X. To my ears it still sounds flaccid, anaemic and dead, just like the "Treadplate" model, although not to as great an extent admittedly. The Triple Rectumfrier patch is actually not so bad though to be fair.

I'm also not too fond of the Uberschall model as of yet, which is a shame, although I'm well aware it may just need extensive tweaking. It's no big deal however, when there are 20+ other high gain models which I'm more than happy with...

As far as the collectors classic models, I really shouldn't comment because I haven't really sat down and messed about with them yet, short of making a sinister sounding clean patch with "L6 Twang". I'm also not the best judge of such tones to be honest, so it's probably best left to someone else.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with this new update and upgrade package, and it's certainly about time the XT got an update. Whilst I've had my problems with L6 Europe's customer service in the past, I find it hard to fault the latest software releases for the XT. I encourage anyone who owns one to download the version 2 update, and consider buying one or more of the expansion packs .

Re: POD XT users

Thanks for the long review. I just updated my XT and bought the high-gain pack. More to come.....

Looking forward to checking it out but it is damn near 1am and I get up at 5

Re: POD XT users

Not to endorse anything remotely questionable in the eyes of the law... but it wouldn't be possible to store expansion packs onto a floppy disk which would happen to find itself in the mail for the price of a bottle of jack would it?

Re: POD XT users

how much does the XT cost? is it the one on the pic on the page? do i HAVE to buy the packs or can i fiddle with the controlls to get those sounds? (i'm a pod newb)

Expect to pay around $300 for a PODxt....

You can upgrade the software for free to Version 2.0... this means that the existing sims sound better, you get a couple of added effects, and four extra amps. It is the one in the pic on the main page...

You don't have to buy the expansion packs... the packs just allow you extra amps and effects. They contain amps and effects that do not come with the PODxt....

Without these expansion packs... you still have about 30 amps and 40 effects to play with, not to mention cabs, mics, and so on.

Re: POD XT users

sounds awesome.. now to sell my gear to get it LOL.. i'll definately look for it in the stores .. maybe i get lucky hehe

Re: POD XT users

If any of you PODxt 2.0 users would like my bank of patches, just visit my site or email me at az@instituteofnoise.com. I was one of teh beta testers and fortunately ended up having a bunch of my patches as factory defaults in the model packs.

This upgrade just brings it that much closer to not being able to tell the difference. I just did 2 sessions this week for some TV show cues with a bunch of the heavier sounding models and it sounded killer. Tone as relentless, especially layering similar but different models down as doubles and triples. I'm very pelased with the results to say the least! I may have some of these MP3's posted on my Line 6 site below laster this coming week.

BTW, for thos looking for one... there's a guy selling his pratically new POD xt on my site for $250. He has two of them and obviously doesn't need the second one.

Re: POD XT users

wish i could take it off of his hands at this point .. but i lack the money, paypal account or a visa

Re: POD XT users

I paid the $50 and am pretty impressed so far.

I am still playing around with it but it is a lot of fun. I wish there was a Ubercab included in this but I don't think there is. I thought it was weird that the Cornford head was paired with a 2X12 Matchless cab. Can you expand on that Institute of Noise?

Thanks. More to come after I really get into the new models.
