Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Good, leave the pointy stuff for people who appreciate it, like me.

I wouldn't mind it in like an Iceman body or a Charvel/Jackson style body...but would prefer it in a Spector body ;)

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

If I could afford a decent X shape, or star, I would in a heartbeat. I wouldn't by a cheap pos just because it was pointy.

I agree.

I want another bass (my dad commandeered my Spector) but I just don't play enough to justify having one right now.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

After years of playing mine with stainless steel strings, the frets are shot. I have an old Cortez bass that I'm planning on swapping the decent parts from my current bass, like the pups and bridge, onto. It's what my budget will allow. Oh, and it's not pointy at all.

Is it worth a refret? Or time to make it fretless? lol

Yikes. That green disaster looks like an implement of torture. But I guess that's the idea.

No, I will never be in an eBay bidding war over something like that.

I've played fretless. Just not for me. A re-fret would cost more than what I originally paid for it. Besides, it's not like it's a vintage Fender or anything. It's served it's purpose and it's time to put it out to pasture. One of the pickups is a Duncan QP. The bridge is a Leo Quan Badass II. Those are worth saving.

Fretless are strange beasts...I played an awesome Ovation fretless bass the other day at a local shop–they wanted more than I wanted to pay lol

Can you save the body and go with Warmoth or something?

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

I could, but then, the neck would be worth far more than the body. Like I said before, we're not talking Fender here, or even Ibanez or Yamaha. It's an old Johnson that couldn't have cost more than $100 brand new.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

It was given to me about 10 years ago. I used it to practice both my playing and modding skills. Like I said, it's served it's purpose.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

you could still practice modding skills with a home made refret, nothing serious to lose, anyway knowing how to refret is a useful skill, even if you end up doing a bad fret work you can always refret the thing send it to get a fret dress

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

I could, but the neck on the other bass is fine, so it's just easier to swap the pickup and bridge over on to it than to mess with a re-fret.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Or just yank the frets off, and glue in maple veneer, to give you fret lines...fretless sound, but you still know where you are.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Seem more trouble than it's worth.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

*shrug* It's pretty easy to do, and if you screw it up, you're already considering tossing the whole kit'n'caboodle. Nothing to lose.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

Nothing but time. As I said, I already have a plan and the means to achieve it. All I need is a new set of strings.

Re: Pointy basses that aren't horrible

I would buy that in a heartbeat. Especially with that pickup configuration and bridge.
And I'd wire it up with a 5 way
Neck pickup
Outside coils in series
Both pickups
Inside coils in parallel
Bridge pickup
That would be after I swapped the stock pups for Q-Pounders.
