Always on. Most guitars look way better with the rings IMO.

Same with pickguards. Always on. They are an essential part of most guitars' designs, to my taste. My 2004 Les Paul came new without one, and I added one, screw holes and all, with no qualms.

On Gibsons they just look right. All of my Gibsons have 'em, except for one Orville ltd run/custom color that came with gold hardware and no pickguard or switch ring. And even that one, I've considered putting one on. Looks funny to me without one.

I typically am drawn to Lesters with the pickguard and ring. So I just leave them on when I buy a guitar. I do not think I would go as far as installing them on an axe that did not come with them. If I did the pickguard would be more likely to go on before a poker chip, I am hard on a guitar's finish.

i prefer without the ring or guard most of the time but sometimes it looks like it fits

I’ve tried mine without but ended up putting them back on. Pretty much the same story with pick up covers.... I’ve tried without but put them back on.

If you don't like the switch ring and pickguard, I'm not sure you really want a Les Paul. Maybe you want a PRS single cut or something else.

duane allman played a gold top that didnt have either and he pulled the guards off both his bursts. thats im sure at least part of the reason i prefer them without. the chip doesnt bother me but i prefer without the guard

Totally depends...I like them on some Les Pauls where they match the binding and the pickup rings. Most guitars I would say no...just a personal thing.

I would say in 80-90% of the Les Pauls that I see, I would prefer some sort of switch ring, there are rare exceptions but I think most look better with one, and just look incomplete without one. Pick Guards on the other hand I can live without. I have two Les Pauls, and one has one, and one doesn't, but I see many Les Pauls without one and I think they look great.
