Hey mates, i'm just wondering what's the preference among people here: 21, 22 or 24 fret guitars!

I've noticed that 21 fret guitars lets the neck pickup sit closer to the middle of the guitar, and it therefore picks up different harmonics, and sounds even more "necky" ;). Warmer, sweeter and "hollower".

On 24 fret guitars, the neck pickup seems to have much more attack and definition. Clearer, and has more attack.

My personal preference is the sound of 21 fret guitars, and i never use the last three frets anyway, rigth? ;)

Cheers!

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

i have a 22 and a 24 fret guitar. I have no purpose for anything higher and i don't like punching the check pickup. I chose 21 strictly on feel

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

22 and 21 are the same. Pickup is put in the same spot either way, 24 it's set back more.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I own mostly 24s because I sometimes like to hit that high E without bending. That said, a 22 does okay but I don't seem myself owning a 21 fret electric guitar.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

21 and 22 fret necks for me. If I want those higher notes, all I do is bend the sh*t out of them :headbang:

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I'm generally a 22 fret guy. My tele is 21, and sometimes I find myself wanting that D on the 22nd fret without bending to get there. I have a couple 24 fret necks that do occasionally get used at 23 & 24, but that's fairly uncommon. I like the neck pickup location better on 22 fret guitars as well.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

My RG has 24, would i miss those last two if they were not there???....... Not at all.

If i was custom making a guitar for myself i would deff go for 22.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

Most of my guitars are 24s but my Custom B.C Rich is a 22 since H-H-H configuration wouldn't fit on a stealth with a 24 fret neck. But in fact i never really felt a great distance since i nearly don't use the last 2 frets.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I prefer 24 frets. I don't NEED the extras, but on 21 and 22 fret guitars, the neck pup sits directly under the harmonic (where the 24th fret would be) and, IMO, it detracts from the tone of the pickup (some of you may think it's better that way). If I could get a 22 fret neck with the pup moved, I'd probably be fine with it, especially since, on many guitars, the 21st and 22nd frets are so hard to access, the 24th would be impossible.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I love the sound of 21/22-fret guitars with a single coil in the neck.

However, most people who play 24-fret guitars who are shredding the bajeezes out of the thing aren't looking for that same sound.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

My main guitar, the Schecter C1 is a 24 fret. I never go that high, but the guitar is too nice to bother switching for. I do greatly prefer 22 fret necks because I love the neck pickup sound when it's in that spot.

yupp, that's why I voted 21. but works also with buckers

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

Sound = 22.

Playability = 24.

My comprimise = Hardtail with 24, Floyd with 22 ;).

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I prefer the playability of 24 frets and really dont care about the difference of neck pickups tones. 24 it is.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

If Joe Satriani can do everything he does with 22 frets, I'm sure I can deal too.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I love my Tele which has 21, but I wish it had 22. There's enough room, I don't know why they didn't...

24 is nice, I have a few, but 22 is just right...

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I'm just wondering how often the 23rd & 24th frets are even used. When I was shopping for my current electric guitar a few years ago I was so determined to have 24th frets however 99.999% of the time I've been playing, I've never needed them. I think having 22 frets over 21 can be important though.
