Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I used to swear by 24. I thought, "more is better" and that my playing would be hampered with fewer frets available. Then I got a 22. Then I got a 21. Funny, I don't miss them when they're not there. I don't hear a sound difference, but I do like the completeness of 24. Two sets of 12. Highest frets mimic the open strings. There's a balance there. Just seems to be the perfect deal. Plus I love landing on that high E and not having to bend.

It does surprise me when players like Eric Johnson use 21. I think, "doesn't he long for hitting those high notes?" I guess not.

Remember those Washburns with like 36 frets in the 80s with the crackle finishes - those were great.

i like playing my 22 fret guitar, but sometimes its just not that comfortable than a 24... that´s why i like and choose the 24 fret guitar...

22 or 24. Personally, I like the neck pickup on the 24 just the same as on a 21 or 22. Different sounds for different guitars!

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

24 fret guitars tend to get a vowely sounding neck pickup. I dont like that, i like my neck pickups to be bassy, waily and rich. I learned how to play on a 19 fret acoustic so i dont use those other frets....

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

i don't use all 24 frets on my schecter but it gives me a nice peace of mind to know that they're there.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I prefer 21 frets. 22 at the most. I like my Neck pickup staying in the normal spot. Its the sound I'm used to. So I don't like the idea of changeing that.
Also most 24 fret guitars have really flat fingerboards (12" radius or less). and I like my Boards Fairly curved (anythingless than 10" feels weird).
And theres also the fact that I never play past the 20th fret anyways. I've got Gigantic hands, and my fingers get bigger towards the tips (weird I know, but true). So its hard enough for me to hit those frets without plunking out, I'de end up just looking like a retard trying to play on the 24th fret (not a single note would ring out hah).

All my Soloing is done between the fifth fret A scale, and the 17thfret A scale. I've got an Octave to work with. I don't really think I need more than that.

And truthfully a super talented person could probably blow all of us away with just 12 frets. The less you have to work with the better you'll become. At least thats what I think anyways. Less choices = More innovation.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

I like the fact that my esp has 24 since I can't actually bend the 11s worth crap, haha. When I had my jackson I didn't miss having the extra frets, but it's nice having them there with the huge strings. In the end it doesn't bother me much, but I don't really need that "jazzy/bluesy" or whatever sound the 22s get from the neck so whatever the guitar has is fine with me.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

24 because its more playable(as said before) and i like the sound of the neck pickup in a 24 fret guitar better.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

22. I have an affinity for twins...2...2....22.

Twins balance out nicely.

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

Where´s the option for more than 24 frets, like 36?? I played a 36 fret washburn yesterday, and it´s very addictive :headbang:

Re: Poll: 21 frets versus 24

22!!... I havent needed anything higher than the D as of yet.... Of course, the styles I play dont generally go that high, anyway....

I WOULD miss the D, if I were to go down to a 21 fret guitar... There are several songs where I hit the D... And they dont call for the dynamics of a bend!

That's crazy. I can't imagine playing most of those frets beyond 24 without having lil' tiny fingers.
