Poll: Help Decide New Inlay's On My Favorite Strat

JohnJohn is re-furbishing my favorite strat neck. I originally just wanted to have the current plastic fret markers replaced with abalone or pearl (they're smaller than 1/4" currently) and have a fret level/dress done. John is going to steam a couple of dents out of the fretboard, sand it level and then oil it, making it much darker, which I prefer. I've decided I like the look of abalone better than pearl on this guitar.

John has had the idea to possibly replace the 2 12th position dot markers with a block of abalone, etched with my initials, name, symbol that I like, or almost anything really. Or, I could have each of the 12th fret markers round, as they are now, but with a simple "J" etchet into them. Or, they could be MOP instead of abalone. I need your help in deciding.

This strat is very special to me. It's the first electric guitar that I bought, and I refinished it myself. Needless to say, even though it's not really worth anything...it is to me, so I want it to be just right. I'm also seriously considering letting the results of this poll determine what John does to the neck....so be thoughtfull and let's see what we can come up with.

Jeff,

As it is a keeper and means a great deal, I have three suggestions and you should have the the block of abalone etched with the following:

1. Your own name
2. Your wifes name
3. Your daughters name

For me any of the above would be appropriate but of course it depends on you and what you feel about the suggestion. I think having your wife's name is going to be more appropriate given the wonderful life that you now have and she will of course understand the true value of the guitar.

Another for abalone dots with the block. Maybe, depending on Johns skills (he's a great guy, but what I'm about to suggest is very hard) you could have your name cut out in the abalone in cursive, with the rw showing. It's hard, but a very very classy touch. And that's how I'm refinishing my strat right now. I just stained it too dark, so I'm gonna have to sand and sand.

Initials would be cool at the 12th fret. Everywhere else - SKULLS! (Or dots)

Having a whole name or a whole block would spoil it IMO. It would be better to go with a discrete thing, such as initials. Personalised, but not over the top.

However, I hope that whatever you do, you love it to bits!!!!

I'd do the initials thing. No block if you can swing it. It's much more subtle IMHO and would fit with the rest of the dots better.
