Re: Poll: Help Decide New Inlay's On My Favorite Strat

Personally i think thr J inscribed in each dot would be the best, Its not to flashy or obvious but IMO its the small things that count, and if you were to be playing it somewhere chances you'll be the only one who knows about the dots, its a kind of secretive blessing youd be giving it..

Sorry if that made no sence or sounded strange..its very late..

All abalone dots, with a cursive J inscribed screams class.

Yes they have John. I'm kind of starting to lean that way myself. It's a tough decision, and I know that whatever I decide you'll do a fantastic job on. I like the idea of having my name, my wife's name or the like carved into the block of abalone, but I also like the notion of keeping it traditional and subtle.

When I was leaning towards the block, my though on what to inscribe was heading towards "Sweet Melissa", for my wife. I'll have to decide soon and let you know.

Re: Poll: Help Decide New Inlay's On My Favorite Strat

Go with the Green Abalone.... It is so beautiful, and against Rosewood it will really stand out. Then do the block @ 12 with your initals or whatever your choice in the same abalone. I think the green abalone is called Pualla!! John would know.

Re: Poll: Help Decide New Inlay's On My Favorite Strat

definatly initials, not name, not plain, not block
i was gona get " l e s * p r u e " on a les paul for my friend prue but we decided it would be over the top!
initials are classy imo

What if we carved that into a fake truss cavity cover?

That would be kind of cool....will there be room for it with the way that locking nut is set up?

Do you mean to cut the intials out of abalone and inlay that into the neck?
Yikes.
If that's what the man wants then he gets, but you can do all the saw work,(j/k buddy, neat idea)
No, like have the rosewood show through on the abalone. Like I said, very hard to do (I could cut the abalone, but I dunno about the wood) but a really classy touch.

Yes it can.You would have to grain match the rosewood and sand & scrape it out. With the right touch the old inlay spots would be either barely visable or slightly noticeable from certain angles.

in that case, that gets my vote!

I just think it makes a guitar look less cluttered

Re: Poll: Help Decide New Inlay's On My Favorite Strat

Alright, i'm gonna suggest something different.

How about polished black Onyx dots? And the possibly an onyx block with the name engraved onto it.

I once saw a PRS with polished black onyx birds with 24crt gold trim... very nice.

Something different.

Regarding this post, I'd like to clarify that the J should be on the 12th fret marker only! That...is style.

Re: Poll: Help Decide New Inlay's On My Favorite Strat

Ok....the block with the inscription and the plain dots are neck and neck, with the "J" inscribed dots at the 12th a close second. I'm actually leaning towards this option to keep the "classic" look of the neck, and thinking about seeing what John can do with the gold and silver leaf. Perhaps "Sweet Melissa" somewhere on the front or back of the headstock with that would look sweet.
