Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

Found a used (but still mint) EVH wolfgang USA hardtail. Natural finish with a 5A flame top on the guitar center website and the guitar center near me said they can ship to their store in a few days. So, i offered my les paul custom in trade and they yes.....the thing is, they wanted me to turn over my les paul to them before the wolfgang even gets here and I have a chance to play it. I straight up told them that was NOT going to happen. After several phone calls, I finally got them to let me keep my LP until the wolfie gets here because I offered to pay for the shipping.....I hate dealing with guitar center some times :deal:

If you ask me that is an the most ridiculous trade in policy I've ever heard of (from the customer's point of view)

.....so stay posted for monday or tuesday of next week. Fingers crossed! :usa2::headbang:

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

Why would you trade a LP custom for an EVH ?

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

At GC, I'd approved no-money transfers before, but only for established customers with a reliable reputation. They're basically treating the LP as cash.

I don't know what state you're in, but in CA there's a 30-day police hold on gear before they can sell it over again.

If you couldn't negotiate a transfer without surrendering the LP, I would've gotten a written agreement that they can't resell it until the 30-day return period passes in case there's something about the EVH that doesn't work out.

I told the guy id pay for shipping for the EVH and he let me keep my LP until the wolfie gets here. So its a win win. The sales rep told me as soon as they would have gotten the LP, it would have gone right into their inventory.

Ive always been really curious about the new wolfs.
I love the les paul, but there is a few tie bits that I don't like:
A) its a bit on the darker side, esp. the neck pickup
B) Upper fret access is limited
C) Its super heavy
D) Its a bit finicky about tuning

I know all these just go along with les paul's in general......but who knows, I may try the wolfie and hate it, so if I do.....I still have my les paul. We'll see

Hmmm... sounds like a fair bargain.

Ya i thought so lol

So if worst comes to worst, I'm out $40 for shipping......ya it sucks, but on the other hand, I still have my LP. Its a small sacrifice to make

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

They only do that because the guitar needs to be paid for so that they can ship it. I've been selling guitars there for three years. Believe it or not their policies aren't in place to cause you headaches. There are so many things wrong with doing what they agreed to do for you. If I were the sales guy or manager at the store that had the wolfie there's no way I'm going to let a used guitar leave my store that hasn't been paid for. Just to let some guy try it in another store. In the time that it takes them to ship it and you to receive it it could already be sold to someone else with no headaches. If it were a crappy guitar that's been sitting in the store for a while and I wanted to get rid of it then yes I'd let it go. So watch out for that.

I would have just told you to buy the guitar then sell the Les Paul when you come to pick it up. These policies are in place because people abuse them. Any schmuck could say "yeah, ship that guitar to me so I can try it. Nah, I don't like it. Bye." That's just a lot of hassle only because someone wants to try a guitar. They can't just let everyone do that, so rarely exceptions are made.

Sorry to be contrary, I just have to give my two cents to any thread that hates on GC.

The people that usually work at guitar center aren't exactly the sharpest tools in the shed

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

And I gotta look out for #1, id rather be out $40 for shipping than be out a guitar if I don't like the wolfgang

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

Personally I think you'd be crazy but it isn't my choice. So if you are hellbent on a Wolfie ( or another guitar) then sell the LP and cash out and have the cash to hand as the LP will be worth more.

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

I haven't even seen the guitar yet, so don't jump the gun

If you haven't even seen the guitar yet, how can you even justify that it's gonna be better than your Les Paul? For all you know, you could probably get it and it be the worst piece of crap you've ever heard or played. Not saying that'll be the case, because I think the USA Wolfgangs are pretty top notch quality, but you never know.

I would somehow convince them to ship the guitar to your local GC for you try out first, and bring your Les Paul with you, so that you can A/B the two, and make your decision. If it's already at the store, then that's half the battle. If it were me, I wouldn't even think about trading in my LP without playing the Wolfgang first.

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

I ended up keeping the les paul. The wolfgang played like butter, BUT the nut was cut too low and it buzzed and I just kinda got one of those funny feelings. I didn't want to take the wolfie unless I was 100% satisfied with it. They listen to your gut feeling, and I had this little voice telling me not to take it. So I didn't.

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

other than the nut being low I loved the guitar. SS frets were super smooth, loved the tone from the pickups, neck was smooth, the flame top was amazing, but the thing that impressed me the most was the sustain. chords sang for so long it was ridiculous. The nut was low so I asked the tech to stick a shim in it for me real quick and he did. The low E sided ended up being too high at that point and it was throwing off the intonation and at that point I decided I didn't want it because I could just feel that this was going to be a problem. I tend to be super voodoo and anal about the set up at the nut, and like I said, I wasn't 100% satisfied with it, so I didn't take it.

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

If you want a guitar perfectly setup, GC is NOT the place to get your gear from ;)

I can certainly empathize with you because I'm the same way when it comes to the playability on a guitar. I think about the gear I've unloaded and some of it would have probably stuck around more if it played better (and some of that was my fault for not knowing what I was doing at the time).

Good on you to make a smart decision and stick with what you know is good rather than letting it go for something that very well could be a headache. This is also why there's no substitute to trying some of this gear in person to make sure it's the right fit as it's so subjective.

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

I will say this though, IF the wolfgang had been set up perfectly and didn't have the nut issues, I would have traded for it in a heart beat.

Re: Potential NGD incoming! Guitar Center headache lol

The LP is a keeper. I don't know how much you play your vintage PRS, but that's the one you should cash out of. Sell it to a PRS collector for top dollar, then take the money and go shopping for two guitars.
