pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

Sounds like lazy, ****ty, one fingered powerchord stuff to me, and then some crappily performed excercises and scale fragments. :(

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

I thought he sounded amazing on the album, but I wasn't quite as impressed with his playing in this video or some of the live videos I just checked out. He's good, don't get me wrong... I just think his studio chops sound a lot tighter than his live chops.

& he holds his pick kinda funny. :blackeye:

You mean, Cut and Paste and editing in Pro Tools? :laugh2:

Without having heard much of their music (I honestly think it sucks donkey balls), that's probably their most used weapon in the studio arsenal..At least one would think so after seeing this video, and the live video people were talking about a while back.

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

He's skilled, but that solo right there kinda sucked. But he was getting some sweet sounds out of his guitar with those power chords (lots of music is power chords Jeff! - they're perfectly respectable!).

But Avenged is not my favorite. Matter of fact I'd place about 155 bands in front of them (I'm not lying or exaggerating).

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

I don't get the synyster hate these days! The guy is talented, there's no way around that. You may or may not like his style or think his playing is too many scales and not enough creative note-picking or whatever. But that entire album is fantastic, and when I saw them live in Hartford early this year, I shat my pants because they were surprisingly VERY good. I went in expecting them to not be able to pull off the leads and harmonies, but actually they did it and Synyster was amazing live.

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

There's nothing to hate with this guy's playing...average bar band level, nothing spectacular, but not too crappy.

I don't see the "amazing" part.

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

if you want a sweet solo... check out paul gilbert.

if you want a sweet solo, check out savatages gutter ballet

if you want a sweet solo, listen to andy timmons.

if you want a solo to rip off your head, listen to jeff loomis

if you want shred and/or kickass classical stuff, check out chris broderick

if you want a sloppy, mediocre solo, check out synyster

Seriously, I'd love to go to some of your bars then. That's definately not the case around here at all bro!

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

I think it's stupid to criticize Synyster Gates because he can't play a speedy solo or his live chops aren't up to your standards. The video still had a decent solo and comparing it to guys who shred or play faster and much cleaner in general is pointless. It's decent, it's not like he doesn't know what he's doing.

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

Most bar band players don't play that stuff, but most could.
We have mostly country pickers and SRV and EVH wannabes here.

It is kind of silly to criticize Synyster. He is trying to bring back the guitar solo into popular metal. Judging by the turnout of this thread, I would say he is succeeding, to some degree. I wouldn't call him amazing though.

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

Wow I can't believe how sloppy a slow intructional solo was. Why do I love that guys tone though?

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

You guys can say what you want - he still sucks.

The guy gets wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy to much credit for guitar playing as does AX7 period. The mainstream media sure picked a lackluster act to label as "the return of the solo." They sure hired one hell of a marketing team for this band. The sloppiest live performance from a "professional/signed" band was them playing on MTV. It was absolutely horrible.

Re: pretty sweet lesson by synyster gates (sweet solo)

its all BS.

the solo never went away in the first place.
people just got lazy and stupid and let mtv pick what they listen to and tell them what "good" music is

Dude don't judge them by the MTV performance. I saw that performance before I saw them live and went "oh no... what did I spend 60 bucks on?" MTV performance was a HORRIBLE mix, I wouldn't even doubt if they could hear themselves well that day to be honest. All you could hear was room noise during that performance.
