PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

Figured a Rat was the way to go but not sure what model. I listened to the clips on the Proco site but wonder what the oppinions are from forum members. I am looking for something raunchy and dry for rythm and single line stuff. Mansons greatest hits cd has a few really cool guitar tones on it and I wouldn't mind having similar tones in the arsenal. Thanks in advance.

I do not like the new rat2 models. Infact i bought one and realized it has a really muddy bass response and not a good tone at all........I changed the chip to the original LM308 and everything was much much better..........so you'd better look at one of the older rat models that come with the LM308N chip....

Where do I buy the LM308 chip? I just bought a used one. Not rat2. Looks new though. I wonder how to tell if the chip is the LM308? What does the chip even look like? I also need a power supply. Recomend one? The serial number is RT-246261 any idea if this is an older one with the good chip? Thanks

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

What do you all think about this guys take on the LM308?

Yes, from what I remember (long time ago I played with this stuff) 180p sounded about right with the TL070. The LM308 is a real p.o.s.. Don't waste your $$ or time with it, IMO. Nothing magic about it - just noisy and harsh. The TL070 sounds real good in this kind of ckt

I personally think the LM308 sounds muuuuuuuuch better in the rat circuit. I've tried both, and the TL070 kinda sounds sterile, while the LM308 is more tubelike and spongy. Here is a picture of what the IC looks like in the RAT. If it is an LM308, it should say it on the top of the IC. It's just a black rectangular box with 8 leads coming out of it.

If your rat doesn't have an LM308, you could buy one and mod it or have someone mad it for you... LM308's are only $4.00 through Small Bear Electronics... http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=204

Klink, nevermind what anyone thinks about Chip A or Chip B. You said you bought one. What do YOU think of the sound of the one you bought?

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

I think it is ok but the low end clips or farts out. I do like the thickness of chunk. I compared it to the tweak fuzz as well. I think the tweak fuzz is more versatile but not as full in chunk. If the rat can be upgraded for $4 I am in. It has a texas instruments chip in it. Can I just remove and replace or does it need to be soldered? Thanks Holy dirt for the help.

By "Manson", do you mean Marilyn Manson? If so, there are better choices than a Rat. I don't mean to steer you away, though, as it's a cool pedal.

Like an Ibanez Smash Box and Lo-Fi.

In the past I've also used a DOD Grunge for Manson. It works well enough.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

Yes Marilyn Manson. I like the kinda thin raunchy single line stuff as well as the thicker overly distorted industrial chunk. LO-FI? Is that by Ibanez? Thanks

It needs to be soldered. I can do it for you for free, but you'd have to pay shipping. I could even just solder in a socket, so that you could swap the chips back and forth without soldering them in the future, in case you didn't like the lm308 chip. That's how my Rat is.

No problem. Just be careful when unsoldering and resoldering the IC's. It's not terribly difficult to overheat them and, ultimately, force them to cease functioning.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

Another local guy has a rat to sell me. It is wider and says the rat as opposed to mine saying just rat on it. Would the wider model have the good chip alreasdy? Any tonal differences?

Here's a page on rat versions:

That's the kind of stuff I was thinking. Also, every tone on AntiChrist Superstar can be aped pretty well with a Boss Metal Zone.

FWIW, John5 used both Ibz pedals mentioned.

Re: PRO CO RAT what model for Manson tones?

I have a gmajor fx unit. Couldnt I just use that in the same way the lo-fi pedal works by thinning the eq settings?
