Re: Pro Co Turbo Rat vs Rat 2 vs You Dirty Rat

When I was buying the Turbo Rat I matched it with the You Dirty Rat. I must say that the difference isn't big... the YDR is mellower and a little more fuzzy why the Turbo is more aggressive and cuts really well through the mix. Both get a good grungy Marshall tone (the TR is a little better for the application IMO).

I went for the TR, thought it was pretty good with humbuckers for anything, but I found it was hard to get it to sound good with my Strat.

Re: Pro Co Turbo Rat vs Rat 2 vs You Dirty Rat

Thinking about picking up a turbo rat myself, heard rat 2 just not as good.

Re: Pro Co Turbo Rat vs Rat 2 vs You Dirty Rat

I have a 4-in-1 Custom RAT. (with a 308 chip)

It has all three Rats in one, and the 4th setting is a 25dB Boost.

On MY RAT, my fav setting is the "You Dirty Rat" setting.

I have NOT A/B'ed my setting with the real deal Pro Co You Dirty Rat model, so unfortunatly i can not say how close my hand made jobbie is to the real thing.

Why choose?

Deucetone:
This is the ultimate Swiss army knife for the analog guitarist. Consisting of two independent RAT units, each Deucetone channel can be used separately, in stereo, or cascaded together for the most insane distortion on earth.

As if that weren’t enough, each channel is switchable between three RAT settings. Channel A features the Vintage RAT, Turbo RAT, and Dirty RAT, while Channel B gives you the choice of Vintage RAT, Turbo RAT, or Clean RAT tones. The Clean RAT is a clean boost, a tone only available in the Deucetone RAT. That’s like having six RAT pedals in one unit. Used separately or cascaded, you have fifteen RAT tones at your feet.

If you ever think you don't have enough distortion or gain, simply cascade one Rat into another.

Isn't that the guy people keep claiming is Jack Black?

Yup, but he is not jack black, Theres a video of him talking about vintage guitars. He just sounds like jack black, EW is his initials.

He builds and sells Luther Drives.

All three are basically the same pedal, the only difference is the clipping diodes, YDR has germanium diodes that clip earlier, hence the warmer fuzzier tone, The Rat has standard silicone diodes, 1N914s or 1N4148s (basically the same), and the Turbo has LEDs which clip later allowing more voltage to pass through, they are also a little crunchier sounding.

So, you could buy any of them and put in a 3-way switch and have all 3 versions.... They also make cool boosters if you bypass the clipping diodes.

Skip all of those and get that Whiteface Rat Reissue. I've had mine for a month and its killer.

Just thought I'd pass this along for those who can't just try any pedal. I've long had an OCD on my pedal board for heavier Overdrive. Its always sounded pretty good, but I've always wanted to try the Rat due to its history in rock. Anyways...I got a new old stock rat with the better chip (LM308) and had it keeley modded. The keeley mod cleaned it up a bit...the filter certainly sounds better. I put it on the board, next to the OCD and it flat got blown off the board. Bottom line...the OCD may not be a versatile tone-wise as the RAT...but it sounds a lot (a lot, lot) better in my book. So, if you have an OCD like I do...don't waste your money on a RAT.

Reaction to this statement ?

Do you really need a Rat pedal ?

Are you missing a lot if you dont have a Rat pedal ?

Bumping this thread as the other thread I suggested a You Dirty Rat pedal to a member looking for a distortion pedal. I did not like the RAT2. The Turbo RAT sounded better, but slighty harshier. I also have the You Dirty Rat, and I absolutely love it. By far my fav. It's more subtle than the other 2, but the tone is just great. I thought I'd give it a try since an amp/guitar store was selling them new on ebay for 70 bucks. I ended up buying another one!

I feel the same way - my OCDv4 over my Vintage RAT, for what I need it for... which is crunch chords without the mud (great individual string/note definition); and clean-up with guitar volume pot. I leave this pedal on most of the time.

Though I still won't give up my RAT... sounds great with my TS, for when I want that combination.

If you DIY, check the BYOC Mouse kit.
It's a Rat clone with lots of mod features.
On opening up my Deucetone, the only difference between the 3 seems to be the component used for clipping.
