Props for Seths

Curly

Moe's Bluesman
My friend Norm came over tonight before we stepped out to see John Jorgenson in concert.

Norm played a few of my guitars. I gave him my Hamer Artist with the stock Seths, and plugged it into my old tweed Deluxe.

He got a big smile on his face, and said, "It's the Neil Young tone!", while he cranked out some "Southern Man" riffs.

and it was all there, brothers - sustain and harmonics galore, and a bit of that 'edge of feedback' tone.

So, props for Seths! :)

Re: Props for Seths

cool !

i always thought southern man was P-90s ... my bad

i am seriously thinking about pulling the bill lawrence L-500 XLs (originals from 1986 !) out of my semihollow and popping in a set of seths ...

cheers

Re: Props for Seths

Seths should be better sellers than they are for Duncan. They are really a *great* pickup. T4d, I think you'd *love* 'em!

not your bad ... I don't really know what he used on that.

I wasn't trying to say we "nailed" Neil's tone on that song, but that combo of Seths + a tweed Deluxe definitely got the Neil vibe. That edgy, harmonic, almost out of control (in a good way) tone. :)

I can hear that from the Seth, I know what you mean. Maybe Neils P-90's had a2 magnets in them? If so, maybe the Phat Cats would nail that tone...

Re: Props for Seths

I read this thread this morning, and I've had Southern Man stuck in my head ever since. I used to think that Neil Young was just radio filler music. Then, I met someone who said that they liked Neil Young. I couldn't believe it. People actually like NY? Really. The older I've gotten the more I've learned to like his stuff.

The ones I like is...Look at Mama there's a white boat comin' up the river. and Cinnamon Girl.

Re: Props for Seths

Neil's BB had one P90 and one Bigsby single coil. that is the metal covered pup.....don't ask......i read that several years ago and i have the tendency to remember inane info:laugh2:

Re: Props for Seths

Please correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't SD not recommend the Seths for amps with over 50 watts???
I was thinking of putting a set in my Ibanez 335 but my boogie pushes 85 watts or so.
Would I really be dissatisfied with Seths in my axe???
BTW... Neil rocks.... I love his tone, story telling type of folk/country/rock.
Even his voice has grown on me, like some crazy rash.

The first one's 'Powderfinger'. That's my favorite Neil Young tune.

Running the Seth through a DS-1 will get you into high gain territory won't it? Almost CC or JB territory? Seth + DS-1 + Amp = a much more versatile set-up than going with a higher output pickup would give you.

Also, let me ask, do the Seth's have any Angus tone when used with the appropriate Marshalls?

Naw, I think of Angus as being pure a5 goodness. The '59 would get you in Angus Territory.

Re: Props for Seths

i dont see why you couldnt use seths with loud amps. i use one with my marshall and have never had a problem. with out wax potting it might howl a little but ive never had a problem
