PRS Mayer Strat

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

The target group must be players who are John Mayer fans, who also love PRS guitars, but have some problem with Fender Stratocasters.
It must be a fairly small niche market.

...and they have a spare $2500 laying around. It is expensive for what it is. If you want a boutique Strat these days, that price can almost get you anything you want.

You can get used Suhrs for that kinda money if you’re looking for a boutique strat

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

I never got into corporate economics, but I assume that with every signature model you're always running the risk of not making your profit back. They tend to be on the pricier side of things, as you're payinga premium for the name, yet they're guaranteed not to appeal to as many potential customers. There's always the people who will buy a guitar if it sounds a plays nice regardless of whose (who's? Help me out here) name is on the headstock but if I had to guess, I'd say those are by far outnumbered by the people who will pick a model that doesn't have your least favorite musician's name scribbled into the headstock.

With this model, I'm wondering if PRS isn't making things even harder for themselves. I think if maybe they had ignored say the pickguard and just mounted the pups traight onto the body (or designed a different pickguard) it would no longer be a crossover strat but rather its own thing, and could be sold as that. Now they've eliminated both non-mayer fans AND strat/PRS purists. Then again, maybe they're making it in such low numbers that it will break even anyway? Not to mention increase brand recognition.

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

This was a lose/lose... If it looked like the Super Eagle, sounded like a Strat and cost $2K they’d have a winner. There is so much competition in the “not a Fender” Strat category it’ll be tough. But if they made 5 for him, people would clamor to buy one, so I see why they did it.

The Fender Mayer Strat is awesome. 62 style Strat with modern upgrades like a flatter radius, big frets, calibrated pickups, awesome neck profile and the signature is small and on the back of the headstock. They are overpriced used now, but they used to be a great value.

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

I like it!
In fact I like the head stock much more than a Fender strat, its stylish and elegant. I hope it will turn into a production series (=affordable version), then I would definitely be in the market for one.

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

Not a fan of John Mayer...the Silver Sky is an interesting concept but it doesn't hook me. I prefer my '98 Fender American Std. Strat much better.;)

$2300 is a production model for PRS, the Custom is a production model at $3500, unless you mean a MIK SE model.

That said, I don't care for it, it's a strat with a PRS headstock and for that $ there are a lot of nice strats (Fender and others) out there that look much nicer IMHO, but, it's all ice cream, and that's not a flavor I would choose.

No thanks.... Not a big strat fan, def dont care for the head stock, plus the keys look too big.. Figured I wouldnt care for the price, and hearing that its over $2k.. def no. And not to be a troll, but even the name is kinda dumb.. For the silver one, ok... But the other colors?
Hey Joe, check out my new red silver sky..

I figure the 2 yrs in the making was how to make a stratocaster, but change it enough to avoid infringement.
Im in the crowd that figures I could get close to a Suhr or something with that money..

I laughed when I first saw an ad for it. He just had that other hugely overpriced guitar with them and the amp isnt cheap either.

ok.. Im not adding anything, rant over...

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

I don't get the the point of this guitar is, or was.

Was it really easier to get PRS to re-invent the wheel than for John to make nice with Fender?

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

Well it might have something to do with you can pull a brand new PRS out of the case and be confident you can play it on a gig that's starts in two minutes. Fender? Not so much.

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

Is there something going on with this guitar that is new or revolutionary or can't get anywhere else? Or is it just a collection of already available features?

Re: PRS Mayer Strat

nope. new pups, contoured lower horn, different headstock, 6 point trem, but nothing close to ground breaking. i really think it all comes down to john plays prs now and wanted a strat so paul built him one knowing that people will buy it
