Now I can't afford to get a cab as yet. Need to save a few more dollars. So, for the moment I'm just going to plug it into my Laney 4x12 v30 loaded cab.

I was hoping though you guys could give me suggestions on speaker choice for this amp. The matching cab has 2 Celestion Heritage G12H speakers but I have never used these.

I don't want another v30 loaded cab as I really want something different for the sake of versatility.

What do you guys suggest would be a good choice for a 2x12?

Re: Pulled the trigger, new Laney Lionheart L20 head

I have played the 5 Watt combo with the same speaker as the external cab, it sounds great. Lionhearts are my favorite Laney amps. Wouldn't think of anything else than the matching cab, the Heritage G12H sounds different than the Vintage 30 and compliments the amp's tone.

look forward to your review

Congrats Pinkbits !!!!

I am very happy for you.

Try the amp with your cab and formulate where you want to take your sound with another cab. Then knowing where you want to take the sound from that V30 cab we can better give you a recommendation.

Thanks Wixed, yep that's the plan. The bonus I have with my current cab is that the speakers are well and truly worn in.

Never even heard one of these amps in the flesh but I took a gamble on my GH50L and love it so thought I'd go Laney again.

I know what you man about the GH50L, I thoroughly enjoy my GH100L.

Your GH50L is a very forgiving amp. It works with many speaker combinations very well.

The reasons I said to check your cab out before going any further is 1: You need a reference point to find out where you want to adjust he sound, and 2: Sometimes we think something new needs to be modded only to find out it sounds pretty good with what we have.

Enjoy the amps PinkBits..... I am jealous. ;)

(Not really jealous, more happy for you. :) )

Could you do a nice review of it and maybe some soundclips (in particular clean tones) as this amp is top on my want list but I don't really get much of a chance to play one because they don't seem to stock them anywhere around melbourne.

I owned an L20 for ages last year, and it's a really nice amp. Lovely smooth overdrive, an excellent warm clean channel (just make sure to play through the correct input or you might run out of headroom with hot pickups), and very lush reverb. The G12H cabinet was perfectly matched to the head, to my ears, but I think V30s sound just as good.

I got my from http://www.bmusic.com.au/

Think he is in Adelaide but Shane (the owner) said he was going to ship it out of Melbourne for me so I would get it sooner. Maybe he has another shop there? Or may know where you can track one down in Melbourne?

I've dealt with a few music shops over the years and Shane at bmusic is just a legend. Always answers all my emails and is very patient.

Check out his website and give him a call.

Re: Pulled the trigger, new Laney Lionheart L20 head

I don't think Shane has another shop, but he might be sending straight from the distributer or something. Bmusic kicks butt, and I agree that Shane's a legend. Easily the best music store that I've ever had dealings with, that's for sure.

Re: Pulled the trigger, new Laney Lionheart L20 head

Thanks for the heads up on bmusic all the shipping prices are really good so that might be where I'll be getting it from if nothing else turns up on ebay.

EL84 amps and V30 speakers aren't a great combination in my experience. You sort of get a midrange upon midrange thing happening and the tone starts to get honky and thick in a bad way in the 500k region.

G12H30s are excellent speakers for EL84s, as they have a more subtle midrange. They would be my number one choice. For a more old school tone, alnico blues are great as well. A combination of a blue and a G12H30 is also awesome and allows for cool live micing tricks.
