Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

Man this thing smokes! TheOdie was less than enthused when he heard about it. He thought "oh great! Another crappy amp to check out for Scott..". After the first few chords played through the presets, he was hooked. He dialed and tweaked on it like a madman getting all the sounds to be just so. I left TheOdie's place even more impressed with it than before. He has it now as a matter of fact as he would probably enjoy messing with it and I don't need to beat it up further in the truck while I travel for work. It loves Vintage 30 speakers. It really loved TheOdie's 4x12 loaded with original V30's specifically. My port city had good bass, but no punch or focus compared to the 4x12. Still sounded good, but it does lose punch being a ported 2x12. There is no substitute for a 4x12. You can get close, but you still won't be there. There is no replacement for displacement so to speak.

This thing has really good marshall clone tones that impress both myself and Theodie. The clean tones were excellent. The mesa clone tone was also very very good. Nothing was perfect but all were close enough to be fun and most of all USEFUL. No fluff on this amp. Everything sounds really good and could be useful to a performing musician. The tone is excellent and the feel can fool even the most hardened tube-head. Most folks wouldn't know you weren't playing an all tube head without seeing it for themselves.

Here's the cool part. I spent a total of $480 for the head out the door with the 3 year GC extended warranty. Turns out that GC is closing out the heads to make room. It's a great time to get a fantastic head for the exact same price as the Chinese made BBQ grill head.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

I want to try one!

Edit: I'd have to pay 655€..which should be about 866$..damn it's expensive here.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

I told you F'ers! LOL

Finally, you'll have an amp that'll get you any sound you want at any volume you want. I've got 10,000 worth of tube amps, and I still use my AD60VTH head on a Bogner 2-12 or 4-12 anytime I'm practicing in the evening at home.

You haven't even scraped the surface of what it can do yet. After owning it awhile, you'll see that it's the best solid state amp ever made. Use the OD models with the amp models, and you can shape the gain structure even further. I like the Vetta too, but who wants to pay Mesa prices for a SS amp???

It's funny that so many metal kids ask what amp to get....you tell'em the Vox Valvetronix head and they go buy a blues combo and distortion pedal instead.
Doh!!! This is the only amp with mondo distortion that can be used in their bedroom.....or with a band.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

I've got (and love) the 120VTH as well. If you've got a couple of cabs laying around spread the speakers out and run it in stereo. The only complaint I really have with the amp is the lack of a solid low end when run through 2x12s. Other than that it's a blast to play through.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

I love my AD50VT. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the blue grill series but it does what I want it to and then some. It has absolutely no problem in a band situation.

Come on mang, they're not solid-state amps. Solid state amps are pure analog transistor amps (baring those with the built in digital effects). There is a tube in the Valvetronix amps, yet they're not tube amps either, or hybrids. Perhaps a hybrid modeller is a better term? Solid-state they're not.

I do agree that they are the best amps of their kind out there right now.

Scott, Queerjoneseer, etc, aint BS'ing! This thing is a superb amp! If I wasnt having money troubles now, I may get one. I even thought for a minute of unloading my Marshall 2100 and getting one. I can get about 92% of the way there with the vox plus, the vox does so much more!

I will have one one day.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

My AD50VT sounds even better now with the new Eminence Governor.
The Marshall tone do not suck anymore (wich originally needed a AMrshall cab)
I still want to built a new enclosure ,to make it even sound better!

It's a great Purchase Scott.those are even better than mine ,and have really great tone!try to use the Rotary cab with the Dumble OD tone. It's melting man!

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

How do you think these sound in comparison to the Randall RM series amps?

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

I also couldn't find the list of amps being modeld in this version of the AD on Vox's website, anyone hook me up?

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

Enjoy! They are awsome amps and I loved my AD60H when I had it. Kind of wish that I still had it at times.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

Deamon BBQ - Take my word for it. Get a vintage 30 speaker for it. At least find a friend who has a cab filled with them running at 8 ohms and plug your amp into it with an adaptor. It's such a good combination! The amp loses any muddy tendancies it has and the clean channels seem to really come alive and sparkle with the vintage 30 speaker. It grows a serious set of bawls with the Vintage 30's fo sho. :biglaugh: :smokin:

BluesguyJ - I haven't tried the Randall RM series amp. Can't help you there I'm afraid. I can say that this amp for the money spent is one of the best modelling amps ever made. Right now, ALL the guitar centers across the US are selling these at blowout prices. This means that the $599 sticker on the amp is too high. Try $399 for a 120 watt stereo amp with models that make your mouth water and a 1 year standard warranty. Add the three year extended warranty for an additional $59. Wise money for such a killer amp. Made me lose my jones for a marshall JCM-900 because it sounds so close. Incredible versatility and sound that is so close that it's scary.

TheOdie is a picky bastard when it comes to tone. Every amp I've brought in to his house has been sent packing by his JCM-900 and him calling out behind the poor amp saying "come back when you're a JCM-900!". This is the first time I've seen him pick up his ears and say "Damn dude! That's f***in cool." I think it's the only amp he's messed with that is considered to be on par with his beloved JCM-900 (it is one of the top three marshalls I've heard in my life). I've heard his amp for years and thought "That's what I need to get", but couldn't figure out which one to get as there are several models etc and his aren't exactly a dime a dozen. His JCM-900 is on par with the JCM-800 amps because it's basically built the same and can easily get the 800 tone. For him to give the vox even a second glance is a remarkable stamp of approval. It's jaw-dropping when you hear him say "I gotta get me one of those". That's like hearing Nakita Kruschev say that he likes rainbows and painting unicorns in watercolor while wearing a ballerina's tutu. :bad: :butkick:

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

Does the Valvetronix line 'goodness' extend down to it's smallest combo's?

Scott, make that 2 JCM 900 MkIII owners that like 'em. I didn't get the AD50VT because of the name on the front. ;) Dave's 900 has one thing mine doesn't right now.....a working power transformer. :laugh2:

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

Sorry to hear about your power tranny. Have you investigated replacements? Check out mojo musical supply.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

I think the blue (AD) series are better. Can't say why exactly, but they just seem to have more realistic models. I played the BBQ grill versions myself before making the purchase I did. I'm very glad I bought the AD version. I've paid some serious money for many all-tube amps over the years and none of them come close to the value of this amp. Not one of those amps can be as versatile plus have good warm tone (I don't mean good for a modeller, but good for ANY amp) like the Vox. The Edana is a fantastic amp and is the only other amp I'm keeping aside from the Vox. The rest are being sold to recoup their cost. The vox is better than they are by far. I'm selling a Marshall Studio 15 and a Traynor YCS-100 head because the vox owns them for HALF THE COST of either one. The vox is just as warm and just as sparkly plus it can do so much more than the other two amps can. I used to be a tube only snob, but those days are over.

Re: Purchased Vox AD120VTH Head plus port city cab.

I have a few leads on a replacement tranny. Just can't do it right now. Thanks for the link. I'll keep that bookmarked.

As for the differences between the blue and silver series (or BBQ grill....lol, I like that), the models that are in the silver series are the same ones that are in the blue series. The blue just has more models and more bells and whistles (like stompbox and cab models, built-in tuner). That's it. Same power amp technology too.
