Push/Pull pot for Strat

I would like to know which pot I would use to add coil-split to my strat? I am going to install a SD humbucker and would like to be able to split the coils, and have seen the pots for sale on allparts.com, but do not know which will fit. Does anyone have experience doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Push/Pull pot for Strat

I would use the 500k audio taper for that purpose. The "3/4" Long Threaded Bushing" shouldn't be required. Keep in mind that push-pull-pots potentially do not fit into the routing because of its height. Thus some woodwork could be required (not a big issue)

Re: Push/Pull pot for Strat

thanks for the input. So the 500k is pretty much the same as the stock volume pot? The woodwork would be to deepen the cavity to make room for the switch assembly attatched to the pot, correct? Not a big deal b/c its a mex strat.

Have a look at the value printed on your current pot. If you're satisfied with it don't change it. 500k is the value I would use for a HB with splitting.
Audio taper is marked with an 'A' in most cases. No 'A' or a 'B' is linear taper.

Exactly, I just mentioned it because I once had to do that on an expensive guitar with (formerly) no experience in woodworking.

Have fun with you coil split option. I did it for all my HBs and I do not regret it

Re: Push/Pull pot for Strat

iirc, it must be double pole double throw. since you are at it, go for dimarzio p/p pots. they are reputed to be much more reliable. tgwif swears by it.

bada bing carries them in his online shop.

edit: realized you are new to the forum. welcome. btw, the guy who invented fire/christian and bada bing/matt are fellow forum bros. do a search for them.

Re: Push/Pull pot for Strat

Another recommendation for the Dimarzio pots. Don't buy the cheap ones from All-Parts or Stewmac, my experience has been that the switches on those are very cheap-feeling, and I've had a couple go bad. The Dimarzios have a much more solid feel to both the pot and the switch. It will fit a Strat just fine, I have a 250k Dimarzio push/pull in a Strat.

Re: Push/Pull pot for Strat

It probably goes without saying, but . . . DiMarzio's are CTS. Its the one DMZ thing I'll buy. :)

Re: Push/Pull pot for Strat

The standard Dimarzio pots are repackaged CTS pots, but the push/pull Dimarzio pots aren't CTS. I'm not sure who makes them, but it's definitely not the same cheap pot with a shoddy switch and loose rotation that the other parts dealers typically stock.

Re: Push/Pull pot for Strat

I switched out the pots on LesStrat. No routing necessary if you select the right size. I don't remember which ones I got, though.

Are the push/push pots available yet? I think those would be better/easier to operate.

BTW, Strats typically come stock with 250k pots. I did go with 500k for the HR/CR/HR combo.
