Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

I just finished installing mine like 20 minutes ago. Unfortunately, my wife has gone to bed and I can't really wring it out right now. Give me a day or two to play with this and I'll report back. What I hear right now surprises me. Not what I expected at all. Very even, smooth frequency response. Not too much bass, treble, or midrange. I expected it to be more like a Distortion on steroids. Not even close. Very hi-fi character. In a good way. Then, when switched to parallel mode, even better.

I'll get back with a better review after I've played with it awhile. So far, I'm impressed.

I assumed so. But this thread started me thinking about trying out the OG El Diablo in the neck spot and the new one in the bridge...

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

Got this reply from Duncan:

I think the comparison to a Pearly Gates is valid, except it's got quite a bit more output. Quite an upper mid cut and growl to it while still having some warmth.
I don't think there is another pickup that it sounds closer to.

Thanks
Dennis

I want a different sound for my Alder Strat, and this might work great.

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

Neat combo, with a Heaven/Hell metaphor thrown in to boot!

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

I take it the OG model is like a Screaming Demon with more mids, and this one is like a more balanced Pearly gates? I bet both models sound great.

OG sounds like a cross between a Demon and a custom to me. Fairly flat EQ, very smooth and articulate

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

Both are phenomenal pickups, you can't go wrong with either choice.

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

Back when people first found out that the Screamin Demon made a pretty decent neck pickup, they started ordering a Demon wound within an inch of its life to go in the bridge. They have become harder to find info on ever since the Tony Iommi pickup of the same name came out.

What's an "OG"?

original gangster which these days translates to original. ive tried the el diablo and i dont think it sounds much like a pearly gates although both are cool pups

What did you think it was like? The demos I saw, it had some great harmonics. It also seemed pretty bright.

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

the diablo is fairly balanced so it has a fair amount of highs considering how hot it is but its not harsh at all. i dont know of anything else that sounds like it, the pg has an upper mid spike which some love and some dont

Iommi came out first in the early-mid '90s, then the OG "El Diablo" in the mid-late '90s, then the rebrand of the Iommi as the "El Diablo" in the early '00s

What's an "OG"?

OG = Original Gangster. Slang for something that's the original or the first of its kind

Re: Question about the EL Diablo pickup.

Not sure I'm getting the "jacked up Pearly Gates" reference with the the twin-blade El Diablo.

It has A2 mags, but that's the biggest similarity really and not much of one since the mags are doubled up, mounted vertically to act as the "pole pieces" for the strings and the coil wire and geometry are completely different.

The El Diablo is notably hotter, stiffer and more compressed than the Pearly. I don't consider them the same tonally, either. The El Diablo is fairly hi-fi/modern sounding unless split/parallel.

Not to say that someone who likes the PG wouldn't dig the ED, but I would steer someone looking for a "jacked up Pearly" toward the Billy Gibbons custom PG set or the '78 model.
