it is may be a dumb question but i wonder how long a pick can "live".i play heavy metal,punk,...so i play fast with a 9-46 set of strings.
i use many picks and get always harder one.i actually play with some dunlop tortex usa 1.0 mm.after a while i have to file it and after a few days...so i wonder how long a pick would normaly last?
if i file it, it normal to play +- one week with it?

Re: question ok pick

Yer i play punk, depends alot on the pick, i play tortex .60 and although i like the feel they go quick, they are past thier best after a few hours, but are still playable for about 3 weeks i guess, before they get to a really bad state. Its a pain i know, but ive had worse, i had a ibanez pick ( One of those 'offspring ones) After a couple of songs it was horribly worn, and left red dust over my guitar (as the pick was red), personally i just use the screwed up ones for practice and then use the newer decent ones for gigs. Dont think theres much you can do about it unless you change you strumming style, or find a really good wearing pick.

Re: question ok pick

I've never been able to keep one long enough to find out. I either lose them or my friends stick them in their pockets (by accident:rolleyes: ) after they play my guitars.

I just use them until they rip apart in my hand.

You should try the Dunlop Ultex picks. These things seem to last alot longer, and pick slides don't cut grooves in them.

Re: question ok pick

It depends on a lot of things. I use Fender medium's 351's Some only last
one song :saeek: others I've had for years with no sign of wear ? I used
to have a hotrails in my Strat and play real aggresive!! The picks would
melt and stick to the blades on the hotrails!!

Re: question ok pick

the fender medium transparent picks... they only lasted me a few songs each... probably a day or two... horrible.

Re: question ok pick

I still have my very first pick, it looks about the size of my pinky fingernail. I usually find that no matter how hard you try, the pick is gonna go. So you might as well do the smart thing, buy 'em in bulk, and strap 'em to yer gee-tar for when you need 'em

Re: question ok pick

I used to use tortex .60's as well. I foudn they went very fast and were noasty looking after a few hours. I later made the switch to tortex .73's and i found them to be better lasting and i also enjoy the sound they give, its a mroe of a happy medium with good strumming and solid enought o solo. I found the .60's great for strumming but wore out soooo fast and they were not that good for soloing for me at least.

Re: question ok pick

Tortex seems to be the industry standard. It's not indestructible but it wears cleanly and evenly. Plus it's stiffer than nylon for the same thickness...

I can't stand nylon picks or the transparent Fender picks. With those it's like I do one pick slide or do one fast, hard song and I'm left with a pile of plastic dust in my hands!

I use Tortex .73s and Ultex 1.0's if I'm playing rhythm and strumming stuff and if I'm doing a lot of lead stuff I'll use Black Stiffo 1.38 Jazz III's or Tortex "H3" 1.14 Jazz III's for lead work. The Ultex takes a LONG time to wear down... I've had one for about 6 months that is just starting to show wear and those Black Stiffo Jazz III's could probably survive nuclear war.

Re: question ok pick

I use black stiffo jazz III's as well, there friggen invincible!

Re: question ok pick

Yeah man, once you wear the tip a little bit the tone improves and and you still get the grip!

Re: question ok pick

Wow . . . I must be playing wrong. I didn't know picks wore out!

(Still got the same ones I've been using for years.)
