Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

Stratologist
An example would be the solo to Riders of the Storm by Hammerfall.

At one moment it goes like this on the B string (well Bb really)

12 0 0 0 14 0 0 0 15 0 0 0 14 0 0 0 17

Something like this.

Anyway at speed, I can't do it. Usually I'd practice and get there, but this is just not working. I don't get how it's done.

Any tips please?

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

I think I see what you mean. It doesn't sound right when I try to do it, either. Maybe they used a compressor or limiter to get the dynamics to even out?

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

It's not just the picking noise... but I just can't actually go from open to fretted. Very slow obviously it's alright because the string settles, but even with 11s and a big fat pick, I just can't get to it properly.

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

I've been having trouble with that, too. I have no idea. Maybe you need 12s. :laugh2:

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

12s and a 3mm pick.

Zakk Wylde's got nothing on me!

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

Maybe not pick the string as hard in open notes (since you're going to need to fret down fast on it, and the more it's vibrating, the harder it will be to land it clean and quick due to the inertia of the string) and do exercises in making your fingers travel very quickly when you fret it?

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

you do not give enough information as to what exactly your difficulty is

is it synchronizing the right hand and left hand motions for clean articulation?

do you need to do some subtle picking hand dampening before/ after the fretted note?

if you leave out the o o o otes, can you play the fretted notes in time?

so it would be
12 rest-rest-rest 14 rest-rest-rest 15 rest-rest-rest 14 rest-rest-rest 17 rest-rest-rest

then, if you 'put back' the middle o notes, can you play that? ...

12 rest-o-rest 14 rest-o-rest 15 rest-o-rest 14 rest-o-rest 17 rest-o-rest

maybe it's a matter of building up to the full phrase

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

Mhmm I'll try that. And yes I can play just the fretted notes in time. I could pick the open strings but they don't sound right at all because when I press down for the fretted notes, they don't ring enough if you see what I mean..

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

are you using a firm alternate picking technique? ... if you try to play all fretted notes like this

12-12-12-12-14-12-12-12-15-12-12-12-14-12-12-12-17-12-12-12

is it clean and articulate?

do you need a set up or new strings?

what kind of guitar? is it a strat with the neck pickup too high?

without seeing you in person,l it is kinda hard to diagnose much more

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

Yep.
No.
Super strat, pickups all at the right height. Wolf notes are not the problem, hearing the note is.

I can play it an octave lower and I don't get the same problem at all. I like my action pretty high though and as such when the string goes from fretted to open, it takes a while. That's why it's not easy to play.

That and I actually am SUPPOSED to play it an octave lower so it doesn't matter a whole lot anymore :D Thanks for the help anyway!

Re: Quick open to fretted strings = big problem

It's still something you should probably work on. I had a lick similar to this, but it descended down the whole string instead. Basically, it's just a case of being very relaxed and light with your left hand. Instead of trying to fret it, tap it quickly and lightly, then work on synchronization.

This sort of stuff is pretty easy to do fast - once you get the knack of it. I can do this at 204bpm once I get warmed up; that's where the metronome stops :p Sadly I'm not much good at anything else >_<

I really need a clip of you playing to know what's going on here. I don't get what should be difficult about this.
