i was wondering if anyone knows how to date these Rats- i've got one and i'm curious to know if it's one of the older or newer ones. little side note- tonight i shined a flashlight on the thing and the logo and labels started frickin glowing in the dark when i took the light off it! picked this thing up off a friend about 2 years ago and never knew that.

Prob mid to late 80's, but not 100% sure. The Rat is a great pedal, iv got the Rat, Rat 2 and the Turbo Rat. Has to be one of the best distortion units out there, highley underrated.

what do you think of the keeley mod on this pedal? is it a good investment? i play a lot of rock and classic heavy metal.

IMHO, its only a good investment if you think it is, and thats all that ever matters.

What does it do? It's the Jeff Beck tone! He leaves one on pretty much all the time...hardly ever turns it off. Lew

Besides only Beck and Gilmoure gets any sound out of it I like....and one or two guitarist more perhaps...not a big fan of distortion.

No but if you want one, get the older ones...has the most soundwise
Me I am just the odd one, I also hate tubescreamers as well :evil: hehe
But they have created classic sounds....but get the right amps for them.

True, the key to great tone is the amp. By the way, i dont use a dist. pedal at all anymore, i just hate to git rid of all the ones i still have, never know when i might need one ?

Yeah, the control markings were made to glow after having the stage lights charge them, I swear you can see them from 15 feet away ... great idea. There should be a date on the pcb somewhere, you could also try to date it from thre pot codes (not that accurate)... really doesn't matter though, if the chip is an LM308A or LM308AN you're good to go.

hetfield used a RAT on RTL .. not the best sound IMO, but at least you know it can be used for trash lol
