Rate the new Marshalls please!

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

Yeah...it has NOTHING to do with WHERE the amp (car...toaster...mattress...computer, etc etc) is made.
It is all about what the manufacture is willing to PAY for.
China can build anything as well as anybody else on the planet.
Companies manufacture a product there to avoid labor costs, fringe benefits, taxes, etc etc.
If Marshall wanted to build hand-wired amps in China, all they would have to do is say so. The factory would fill up with 1/8" turret boards, Heyboer tranny sets and Mallory 150 caps the following week.

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

I think this is true......anyone can have the craftsmanship to make something special. But you never relocate an entire factory to somewhere with dirt cheap labour just to maintain standards, just in another country. Its always done in order to make the cheapest product possible.....often with lower quality control as these parts dictate.

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

it is done for profits! but they charge way too much just for the name "marshall"!!!

I wouldnt really hold that against any company... They arent in business out of the goodness of their hearts they all want to make money. Though at the same time iam saddened to see it. All companies are subject to the winds of change... Even your beloved Orange... The TH30 and the terror series are made in china if memory serves. The original amps had a sound far different than what they have now... not saying better or worse just different.

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

I've been wanting one of the new Marshall DSL amps, but the features I want are not found in any of them....

I would like the DSL15H to have an effects loop, or have the DSL5 or DSL40 in a head verison....

but they do sound much, much better than the Haze 40 I had...

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

On the other hand if the new DSL's were made in England instead of China they would cost $1600 instead of $900 and why buy it when you could get a JVM 210 instead. The production was moved to China so they could produce an all tube head for people one a smaller budget looking for maybe their first tube amp. They needed something to bridge the gap between the JVM series and the MG's.

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

I hope I'm staying on topic, but where does the Marshall "18-Watt", (and clones) fall, as to "genuine" Marshall goodness? There's a bunch of clones and "kits" out there for this amp.

The Marshall 18 Was/Is a "real" Marshall.
All the DSL...TSL amps are not. Not to mention they are POS amps.
Between the thousands of bias run-away issues, that Marshall Never supported, and the epidemic of radial, solder fractures on the selector, jack, and loop connections, I would be happy to never see another modern day Marshall again.
They stopped making "good amps" in the mid 1980's.
Always exceptions of course. But the amps being discussed here are a big let-down.
JMHO...YMMV...JM2C...etc etc
best

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

Yeah...if they are a clone.
They are kind of an odd story. You would need to talk to a Real Marshall Guy, but.....the 18 Watt was a product of the mid-late 60's. Do not know why they discontinued. Then...late 60's-mid 70's, they made the 20. It was never popular as a clone...but you would need to look at the schems to compare them.
The 18 is probably more produced (in the hobby arena) than the 1986 and 1987 are.
I am still a member of The 18 Watt Forum, but I rarely go there...how many, single amps, have their own Forum.? They are Very popular.
Anyway...do not quote me on any of this stuff...but I think I have it all pretty close.
So, after 4 pages, what is driving all of this.? Are you going to Buy/Build an amp.?

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

i have two non-master marshalls and the master volume jcm 800. for everyday use, the jcm 800 is best. you can get some nice distortion at low volume levels. also the volume knob on the jcm 800 is not super sensitive like the non-masters. on the low channel you can actually have the volume at 1 to practice at. with a non-master amp it would rip your head off at 1.

yeah it's a 100W head but you have the power when you need it. all of the newer marshall models you mentioned are just too complex with too many features for me. if you're looking for more features such as channel switching, go for the new DSL. it's the only good "modern" marshall as far as i'm concerned. it does the SLP and JCM 800 tones very well.

Yup, me too. That is, still a member, but don't get over there very often.

If you're talking to me, I'm not the OP. :) (But I've always been interested in that 18-Watt.)

Re: Rate the new Marshalls please!

Hah me too! I got started on 18watt when it was a yahoo group...
though something to keep in mind is that the 18 watt marshall is based on the watkins dominator, So its its own animal... and isnt related to the larger marshalls.

No problem...the "Larger Marshall" was born of a Fender.
It would seem there is an odd familiarity to all amps.......;)

There just isn't a huge amount of topology changes you can do to a piece of 60s tech amplifer. They didn't have digital tech or solid state tech...they could only toss in different tubes for flavor, move the tone stack around, work with power stage functionality and generally cut costs where they could.

You missed my point... most people think the 18watt is a scaled down jtm45... which it isnt, their familial heritage is different.

Jon knows whats up
