Reccomend me a good tube head...

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

I've played a valvetronix, not a head, but I didn't really like it much.
Those sites are cool, but I think they only ship to the USA, and I'm in the UK.

How are the cleans on the peavey valveking heads?

Nope I am pretty sure both ship worldwide...

I have no idea for the valveking unfortunately...

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

Oh, sorry. I wouldn't want to buy something as fragile as an amp from abroad though.

It's kind of between the Laney GH50L with 6L6s, the Fender Bassman, and the Peavey ValveKing Heads. Unless someone else has any good suggestions.

I am not trying to sell to you or something :laugh2:

I understand...

+ you have to play through it before you pull the triger...

A super clean ss amp is the roland jazz chorus. I think it's 60+60 watts. Many people love it, other's believe it's too lifeless...

Also, a fender hot rod deluxe is 40 watts, it has great cleans and takes pedals well.

If you can find all of these amps suggested there and try them, it would be great...

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

Haha! I never said you were. :D
I'll try a Roland Jazz Chorus if I find one. Do you know if they made a head version?
Damn, why doesn't Fender make head version of any of their amps?! The Hot Rod Deluxe sounds pretty good for what I need. I'll bear it in mind, cheers man.

Like I said, does anyone own or has played a ValveKing head clean give me some info on the amp? Cheers.
Has the Fender Bassman only got EQ and a master volume?

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

My buddy AJ is selling his Sovtek MIG 50. My brother Bruce went through it and reworked it so it sounds alot more like a JTM-45. They're cool heads and cheap!

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

I think maybe the bassman is out for now, if there is no master volume, as I would really need the amp to be able to play at reasonable volumes aswell.

Those Sovteks are cool but they're really hard to find here in the UK. I have head the cleans aren't all that great either?

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

Laney GH50L (with 6L6) VS. Peavey ValveKing (with 6L6) VS. Sovtek MIG 50.
Which has the better cleans with a good set of tubes?

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

USed ... Carvin X100b and Traynor Bassmaster. If you can find one used an El Diablo 60w head.

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

Can't find any of those used, not even on ebay! Sorry.
Where are they made?

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

Watch for a used Trace Elliot SpeedTwin, they pop up sometimes and go for stupid cheap especially considering they are custom shop amps.

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

Well i love my Laney GH50L. It sounds fantastic IMO, but i use a reasonable amount of gain and then control it with my guitar's volume. The cleans are pretty good, although when compared to a good fender style amp built for cleans it can't win (to be expected really). It is great for old-school Marshall type crunch and heavier thrash type gain levels. I love it.

All I tell you is that I saw Duke Robbilard a couple of years ago and he was using a big archtop guitar through the SOVTEK MIG 50 and it sounded just like a nice Fender. Nice and clean. Lew

I tried one out at a local music store. It was OK, not far above most solid state amps and perhaps below a quite a few. The clean channel was pretty good, but the overdrive did not seem that versatile. In fact it did not seem to react to the controls. The one I looked at had a price tag of 438.00 and it was tempting, but but I did not have a lot of trouble walking away from it. I brought a buddy with me, and his opinion was the same as mine. We tweaked it for almost an hour and could not get anything really good out of it.

Mr Wolf, are you using 6L6s?

To be honest, I'd never actually heard of that trace elliot amp; but from what I've just read, it sounds great for what I need! I would probably get the H50 head version.
It's british so it should be easier to find than the Sovtek.

Duke Robbilard uses a Sovtek?
Like I said before, I am hard pushed to find one over here, but by all means, I'll try one if I find one.
Do you have any idea of what they go for?

Thanks for the input on the Peavey ValveKing, guitarded. I've gone off it a bit now...

Re: Reccomend me a good tube head...

The laney will smoke the valveking. My friend and bandmate has the 2x12 combo, and the cleans are ok, the gain is getting there. The Laney has it beat on both sides, by a considerable amount too.
