Recommend a new micro amp head

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

If I can actually find an ampeg at a store and test it out (unlikely), I will match it up against the tweaker. Chances are, though, that I'm going to stop into guitar shops and find only the tweaker 15, try it, love it, and buy it. Just waiting on a check, any day now!

Check out your local Sam Ash. I just stopped by my local Sam Ash last week and they had several of those Ampegs on their "closeout pricing". Seriously, my store had five out on the floor for demo.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

How about a Ibanez TSA15H amp head?

- 2 x 12AX7; 2 x 6V6 -- nice Fender-like cleans
- 5/15 watts switchable, with clean most of the way to max. vol; almost no distortion
- pseudo effects loop after the built-in TS and boost circuits
- speaker outs to 4/8/16 ohms

I use this as my home amp; dunno if it's loud enough with a drummer.

I really wanted to consider this one, but I didn't see an effects in and out and I can't live without them. I love delay and reverb, can't give up the quality of those effects

Interesting. I understand we all hear differently. I use my amp's pseudo "effects loop" for just a tinge of modulation from either my Cmatmods Deelay, Malekko Chiclet or Boss FDR-1. Adequate for home use. But I doubt I'd be able to tell a difference in modulation quality if I stuck them in my Classic 30's real fx loop instead.

Good luck with your search.

If you're trying to play loud and clean, you won't need an effects loop. Modulated effects sound better before the dirt, which is why they have effects loops... You add those effects in after the preamp gain, but if you are playing a clean amp and using dirt pedals, its really unnecessary. However, the JCA22H I believe has what you're looking for.

I forgot to mention that I like to use looper pedals too, they sound really bad in front, they have to be in the loop from my experience. I do want to have the option of playing loud and clean, but I'm all for using amp gain too, so I think a loop is a must have for me. I've read complaints about the jetcity loop not responding very well to some pedals, also that amp seems to be designed to go from crunch to lead, not much of a clean channel from what I recall when I played it in a store.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

An EHX 44Magnum power amp to one pocket and an AMT 1 or 2 series preamp of your choice to the other pocket. We recorded guitars today with it and this little combo ate alive some tube big boys. Again.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

Tried a tweaker yesterday, crazy array of tones. I'm surprised how much gain is on tap. It is my top choice, just wish I could get my hands on a ampeg too, I might call around to some places a seen if I can find one.

Ha! I finally looked into this, you are right. Sam Ash has them, and a really good deal too. I just have to drive to the burbs now and check it out.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

I had a Jet city and liked it, but was kinda a one trick pony. got tweaker and find alot of usable tones in it and even found a pretty believable brown tone. Knock on wood, but so far, no issues with reliability. I am running a pair of el 34s in it right now and I kinda like that, but it seems to have taken ALOT of the versatility away. I do like the HK tubemiester too and REALLY want to try a 36.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

The Tweaker 15 is a great amp. I've owned the combo and head version, and I'd recommend either. They sound great with very nice cleans on the US setting, they're built well, and you'll easily be heard over the drummer.

You can get the tweakers used for $250 too! Hell of a deal. I'm still going to try an ampeg first. Those egnaters aren't going anywhere but the ampegs seem hard to find.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

I never reply to these as i don't have a lot of amp experience, but i heard/demo'ed this little 15 watt Ibenez the other day that sounded pretty good and had some versatility to it. The name escapes me ATM.

Orange OR15H? Fx loop plus 7/15W output selection. It only has a single channel, but from what I've seen/heard it could be worth a try.

Played one of these probably 5-6 times at GC...OMG it's f'ing awesome. If I had any extra cash I'd buy one immediately.

I agree, I was blown away by this amp! Too expensive though, I'm spending $350 tops, hence the tweaker and the ampeg options.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

You could also get a Micro Terror and save the rest of yo dough!
That's a great sounding amp too for a hybrid. And loud!

I've got one of the JCA20 heads running into a 2x12 with C-Rex speakers, and it's only a one trick pony until you really work with the guitar volume and your picking dynamics. I once had a soundguy ask me where the channel changer foot switch was, and he was surprised to find out that it was all in my picking hand.
