Recommend a new micro amp head

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

I have a Tweaker 15 and it's very versatile. I can do everything from 60's Surf to Vol. 4 era Black Sabbath. For reverb, I'll use a Boss FRV1. For Sabbath, I'll sometimes use a Catalinbread Naga. The Tweaker takes pedals very well, either in the effects loop or in front. The main reason I wanted the Tweaker was because of the clean tone it retained at high volume. So you might want to A & B the two amps clean channels (Ampeg and Egnater).

I originally wanted the Tubemeister based on features, but sound-wise it broke up too early for my taste. I play a Gibson SG Standard, which seems hard to get a good clean tone on some amps, but the Tweaker pulls it off easily.

BTW - thanks for pointing out the Ampeg GVT15. It's not common to see spring reverb in a 15 watt head. I'll have to check that one out.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

I've had the Tweaker head for a year, with EHX 6CA7 power tubes for almost half that time.

I've squeezed the crap out of them many times and gigged with it too, no reliability issues here.
It's got tone in spades as you already know. And it's very loud.
The stock 6V6 tubes don't have that much headroom though, it went up with the 6CA7 so you'll want that too probably.

I haven't tried the other lunch boxes suggested here, but you wouldn't be making a mistake with it.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

As much as I would like to travel 45 minutes to a Sam Ash to try the Ampeg, I have already pulled the trigger on the tweaker. $250 used, through guitar center, is too good of a deal to pass up. I'm having it shipped to the store. If it checks out ok, I'll be bringing it home next week. The Ampeg really does seem awesome, but not nearly as versatile, also much heavier than the tweaker. The whole point of this was to spend very little money and have something very light and portable. I'll post the NGD next week. Thanks everyone for their feedback!

Keep your eye on Ebay if you're looking for a gig bag; I picked up an Egnater Rebel gig bag for $20. Same dimensions as the Tweaker plus extra room for pedals, cords, etc. An Orange gig bag would work too.

Enjoy.

Great idea! An amp in a gig bag, that is a beautiful thing. Once I get a pedal train with soft case, I'll potentially have an entire guitar rig that I can move in one shot: guitar, pedal board, tweaker, 2x12. That is priceless.

Re: Recommend a new micro amp head

You shoul try a jca22, if you have some small skills with a soldering iron the crunch channel can be easily modded to the clean featured in the soldano decatone and you still have hi gain channel to sweeten things up

Love the tweaker btw, I had it for a year no reliability issues to speak of, BUT beware of the loop... is line level and will make some pedals sound like sh!t...
