Recommend me a great amp please

tone?

New member
Ok so I will tell u what amps I have tried so far what I liked and disliked about them
and maybe you can help

last amp I had was a VHT pitbull50
great amp but is back in Greece
the only thing I didn't dig was it was a bit too dry a maybe too tight
but it had great gain sweetness and balls. Great punch
also played great at low volumes

tried a GDEC 15 fender
yeah it's a cheapie but it's pretty darn good they say the 30 is better but I guess my ears are tuned too much to tubes
so it's almost out of the question

VOX valvetronix
didn't like it. Had a bit better marshally tones than the gdec but no

JETCITY 20
this was a nice amp
lacked a bit of punch and had to be played a bit loud for a thick tone
the say the brown eye mod is the way to go
maybe I was playing it in the wrong cab
I had it in a 4x12 120w speakers

Mesa rectoverb 50
this was my favorite
had tons of gain and was voiced nicely on the vintage channel
I didn't like the modern channel at all
the bad part was the power section
the amp lacked low end oomph
no punch
so a no go
but it played great low
great harmonics rich tone

Egnater
anything from them I didn't like
too nasaly

I am checking out a Reinhardt mi6 and it sounds phenomenal on the video demo but I don't think the gain will suit my needs
it is awesome sounding though
it has power scaling
downside is that I have no one that sells it close to me in California to try before I buy

Splawn steet rod 40
this sounds phenomenal too
I love the overdriven plexi tone more than anything
it has ample gain and sounds like it has that great Marshall punch
the 3rd gear jcm800 sounds good too but I love the plexi hotrodded
this Scott splawn told me sounds awesome at very low levels because it has a loop volume that can bring the volume down very low
this sounds like the best choice for me but there is again the no try before you buy and a wait time
Also I think that splaws are a bit too tight?
If it is less tight than my VHT then I'm good
I know it is definitely not dry like the VHT

I love early halen tones
Gary Moore
overdriven zztop think rythmeen
and Fluid lead tones this is why I think maybe the Reinhardt won't be as perfect as the splawn
other tones I like are
Andy timmons
shenker

basically an awesome marshall tone but sometimes more refined with some delay and the ability to go into fluid gain

I am thinking maybe a Mesa stiletto would work
since I liked the rectos voicing but didn't like that it didn't have more punch
maybe the stiletto will
gonna try one tonight

The Reinhardt is amazing sounding on the vid though
and so is that small splawn combo street rod on the plexi channel

ideas?

Oh and I want to be able to play it at low volumes

Cheers

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

Marshall JMD?
got tubes
models bunch of Marshalls
built in effects
etc, etc.......

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

Marshall is cranking out a ridiculous amount of amps these days.

Maybe it's just me...

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

Start with a Fender Deluxe or something close to it, add a Radial Plexi pedal and an Ethos overdrive pedal...

Might want to try a Blackstar - I haven't heard one yet, but love the design elements I've read about and am looking forward to giving one a spin.

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

I'm no bogner expert but doesn't their stuff often kill for hot-rodded british tones with good versatility?

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

Splawn!! The qr are loud as H--- but the loop master vol is awesome! gives you almost ALL the tone at bedroom levels.. There is an new demo of the streetrod on youtube that is amazing! Makes me want one so bad when I have basically the same.. haha
Ill put up the linky if I can find it after work..

Makes me think of Motorhead... I am the one.. Orgasmatron..

here it is!

This is the thread where everyone recommends the amp they currently own, but not necessarily the best they've heard/played.

Lol!!!!

Good one man

I have to say that Marshall leaves me cold
I would rather get a moddeler than a new Marshall
now an old one that's a different story

the VHT is made for only 220 or else I would have already done it
plus it's a combo
so it weighs a ton

bogner is s tad above my budget
I will go around 2k and that has to
sound phenomenal

Splawn is a huge thought
I love the hot plexi clips but pay before you play
all this stuff is so personal

The reinhardt is just so classy

what do I do if I don't like the splawn?
I doubt that will be the case but

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

well
I currently own a Carvin Belair

just saw the ads for the Marshall and your post sounded like you wanted a Marshall

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

From the attributes/amps you said you liked, the Stiletto may be just right for you. Budget friendly build quality that is second to none.

You will get the quick response of a Marshall style circuit, not so tight that it sounds choked or dry. It has a bit of the Recto agressivness on the higher gain settings, but with a very defined midrange and high end. Its lower gain settings are very sweet and chewy, the cleans are very good for an amp of this nature. They are good in the sense that sound nice and have a nice body to them without being muddy or overly thick.

This is an amp you definately EQ with your ears, not your eyes, it is a common to turn the presence down quite a bit, and even off with higher gain settings.

I just noticed where you lived...I lived there in my military days at Ft. Bragg. I had a tobacco barn in the back yard and all....

Hey man, I didn't say it, but I gotta agree. If he liked the Rect 50 best out of what he tried, but would like it to have more punch, and didn't like the modern channel, this amp could do the trick quite nicely.

So yeah, I recommend the amp that I own. It actually seems fitting this time around.

Re: Recommend me a great amp please

Why not get something similar to the Mesa you liked but since you disliked a lack of bottom end get a closed-back 2x12? Or a 4x12 for that matter.

I'm not a big fan of random shots into the wild. You can develop something based on things you know, then go from there. Since the resell value of guitar gear is pretty good that works reasonably well, minus the unshippability of large amps and cabs.

This is true. If you looked at either getting a Stiletto or an Electrodyne and you plugged it into a mesa 2x12 rect cab, you could get interesting results. Some marshall models plugged into that cab would also give you great tone.

LOL! Well, I recommended what I thought was best.. I mean, Id recommend a Bogner ETC over the Splawn, but its wicked pricey. Plus he mentioned the loop volume..

Quite honestly, wait times are high for new Splawns.. If you dont love it, I think you would be able to sell it pretty quick.. I bought mine from a dude on the splawn forum..
